Chapter 3 - Blood and Betrayal

Thirty minutes later, the front door of our modest rental home clicked open.

I was sitting on the living room sofa, holding a warm mug of chamomile tea with both hands to keep them from shaking. Emma was asleep beside me, curled up with her favorite fleece blanket pulled to her chin. Her left eye was swollen shut, bruised deep indigo and yellow, and a thick white splint was taped across the bridge of her small nose.

When Daniel walked through the door, my entire body went limp.

He dropped his duffel bag onto the hallway rug. He stood there for a heartbeat, his broad shoulders dropping, the soldier's mask peeling away to reveal a broken-hearted father.

"Daniel," I whispered.

He crossed the room silently and sank to his knees in front of the couch. He didn't say a word. He just buried his face in Emma’s blanket, his chest heaving with silent, ragged breaths. Emma stirred, shifting slightly, and her good eye fluttered open.

"Daddy?" she mumbled, her voice muffled through the swelling.

Daniel looked up, wiping his face quickly with the back of his hand. He gave her the softest, warmest smile I had ever seen. "Hey, peanut. I told you I'd come home."

"Did you take an airplane?"

"The fastest one in the sky," he murmured, gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her bandaged forehead, careful not to touch the bruises. "How are you feeling, baby?"

Emma's lip trembled. "Aunt Vanessa said I’m a bastard. She said you aren't my real dad because my mommy had me before she met you."

A muscle twitched violently in Daniel’s jaw, but his voice remained gentle as a prayer. "You listen to me, Emma Carter. Being a father isn't about blood. It’s about who shows up. It’s about who loves you more than life itself. When I married your mom, the best part of my whole life was signing those adoption papers. You are my daughter. Forever. Nobody on this earth can change that."

Emma let out a small, shaky sigh and leaned her head into his palm. "My nose hurts, Daddy."

May you like

"I know, peanut. But Daddy's home now. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. Not them. Not anyone."
