Chapter 18 - Richard's Downfall

Two weeks after Vanessa was transported to the state prison, Richard Vance faced his own reckoning.

Faced with overwhelming evidence of grand theft regarding my stolen college trust, forged bank documents, and four counts of tax evasion uncovered by Aunt Evelyn's forensic team, Richard chose not to risk a trial.

He accepted a plea agreement.

He was sentenced to three years in federal prison, alongside a mandatory restitution order requiring him to pay three hundred and twenty thousand dollars—the full stolen trust with ten years of compounded interest—directly to me.

To satisfy the debt and avoid immediate asset seizure by the federal government, Richard was forced to put the grand family home on the auction block.

On the day of the auction, Daniel and I drove past the house one last time.

A large red **FORECLOSURE AUCTION** sign stood crooked in the front yard where Emma had once been kicked out. Movers were carrying out Richard’s mahogany dining set and Diane’s antique china to be sold off for pennies on the dollar.

Richard was standing by the trunk of a rented sedan, holding two garbage bags containing his remaining clothes. When he looked up and saw my car, his face crumpled into an expression of pathetic, pleading sorrow.

He took a step toward the road, his lips moving as if to say, *Sarah, please.*

I didn't roll down the window. I didn't slow down.

I looked straight ahead, pressed the gas pedal, and left him in the rearview mirror where he belonged.
