Chapter 11 - The Bloodline Revealed

I sat in stunned silence as the truth washed over me like a tidal wave.
My entire life, I had grown up believing I was completely alone in the world—an orphan bounced between foster homes across Illinois until I aged out of the system at eighteen. I had never known my mother’s face, never known where my dark hair and hazel eyes came from.
Now, sitting in the palatial dining room of the Moretti estate, the missing puzzle pieces of my life locked violently into place.
“Daniel knew?” I choked out, clutching the letter to my chest. “From the beginning?”
“He found you to protect you,” Vincent explained gently. “When Daniel escaped with Grace, he knew Richard Sterling would eventually scour the state looking for any loose ends. If Richard discovered Elena had an heir *and* a living sister, you would have been targeted to eliminate any competing claim to the Vance family estate—the original source of the Sterling family's wealth.”
Vincent tapped the adoption document. “Daniel approached you to be your shadow. But he fell in love with you, Clara. He couldn't leave you. And when you became pregnant, he realized he had two children to save: Grace, and your unborn baby.”
I looked out the French doors. Grace was rolling on the grass with the puppy, her joyful shrieks carrying through the morning air.
*My niece.*
The little girl I had spent the last twenty-four hours weeping over was my own sister’s child. The sister I had never had the chance to meet, to hold, or to comfort during her dark years in Geneva.
“Elena looked like you,” Vincent whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “When you first walked into this mansion eight months ago applying for the housekeeping position, I stopped dead in the hallway. You have her smile, Clara. Her exact mannerisms. I thought grief was driving me insane. That was why I ordered the staff to give you light duties. I couldn't bear to see someone who looked so much like my wife carrying heavy burdens.”
Tears streamed freely down my face. “Daniel sent me here because he knew you would protect me, even if you didn't know who I was.”
“And I will,” Vincent said with absolute finality. “For as long as I draw breath.”
Suddenly, a sharp, distinct tightening seized my lower abdomen.
It wasn't like the muscular spasms from the stairs yesterday. It was deep, rhythmic, and accompanied by a sudden, warm sensation that soaked through my skirt.
I gasped, gripping the edge of the mahogany table.
“Clara?” Vincent was on his feet in an instant.
May you like
“My water,” I breathed, looking up at him with wide, frightened eyes. “Vincent… the baby is coming.”
