Chapter 17 - The Midnight Ultimatum

The digital clock on the bedside table glowed a harsh, unforgiving 11:15 PM.
Clara stood by the window of her bedroom, the moonlight casting long, skeletal shadows across the hardwood floor. In the adjoining nursery, she could hear the soft, rhythmic breathing of Grace and Danielle as they slept, completely oblivious to the monster circling their lives. Every instinct screamed at her to wake Vincent, to show him the note, to let his formidable protection wrap around her like a shield.
*“If you tell Vincent... your daughters will learn how fragile a little girl's life truly is.”*
The threat echoed in her mind like a death knell. She couldn't risk the girls. Julian Vance was a sociopath who viewed human lives as chess pieces, and she knew from her time dealing with the Stirlings that men like him always kept their promises when it came to cruelty.
Moving silently, Clara dressed in dark denim, a black wool sweater, and sturdy leather boots. She reached into the hidden compartment at the back of her closet, pulling out the genuine trust ledger—the original document Vincent had managed to secure from the estate lawyer’s office weeks ago, before Julian ever made his move. It was the only leverage they had left.
She tiptoed down the stairs, her heart hammering against her ribs with sickening velocity. Just as her hand touched the brass handle of the front door, a heavy, warm arm wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a broad, hard chest.
Clara gasped, stifling a scream.
"Where do you think you're going, *miele*?" Vincent’s voice was a low, dangerous growl directly against her ear. He wasn't wearing his jacket, just a dark cotton shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing the corded muscle of his forearms. He had been awake the entire time.
"Vincent—please, let me go," she whispered, tears springing to her eyes as she tried to pull away. "I have to do this. It's the only way to keep the girls safe."
Vincent turned her around slowly, his dark eyes boring into hers with a terrifying intensity. He reached out, his long fingers gently plucking the heavy leather ledger from her trembling grip. He looked down at the document, then back up at her face, his expression darkening into a mask of pure fury.
"You read Julian's note," it wasn't a question. It was a statement of cold, absolute fact.
"He has eyes on the house, Vincent! He has people watching the girls!" Clara sobbed, burying her face against his chest as the terror finally broke through her defenses. "I couldn't risk them. I couldn't."
Vincent wrapped his arms around her, holding her so tightly her ribs ached, his chin resting against the top of her head. When he spoke, his voice was no longer a growl; it was a lethal, quiet promise.
"Clara. Look at me."
She raised her head, looking up into his fierce, unyielding gaze.
"Do you really think I left our home unprotected?" Vincent asked softly. "Do you think I didn't see Julian’s shadow the moment he stepped onto our property? The guards patrolling the perimeter aren't just estate staff, Clara. They're former federal agents. The girls were never in danger—because I moved them to my brother's safehouse in Vermont three hours ago."

Clara stared at him, the breath rushing out of her lungs in a wave of overwhelming relief and disbelief. "You... you knew?"
"I know how predators operate," Vincent said, a dangerous, predatory smile touching the corner of his lips. "And tonight, Julian Vance is going to learn what happens when you try to hunt a Moretti."
