Chapter 18 - The Lighthouse Confrontation

The wind whipped off Lake Michigan in violent, freezing gusts, howling against the weathered stone walls of the old Evanston lighthouse like a pack of starving wolves. Below, the dark, churning waves crashed against the jagged boulders with deafening fury, sending up clouds of cold spray that misted the air.

Julian Vance stood at the edge of the observation platform, his dark overcoat snapping in the gale, checking his gold pocket watch. He looked entirely undisturbed by the elements, a picture of aristocratic arrogance waiting for his prey.

Footsteps crunched heavily on the gravel path behind him.

Julian didn't turn around immediately. He assumed it was Clara, broken and terrified, carrying the ledger just as he had commanded. "Ah, punctuation is everything, Mrs. Moretti," he purred, turning slowly with a triumphant smirk. "I knew you had the sense to—"

The smirk vanished instantly from his face.

It wasn't Clara standing at the entrance of the platform. It was Vincent Moretti. And behind Vincent stood three heavy-set men in dark tactical gear, their faces expressionless, blocking every possible exit from the platform.

Julian’s eyes darted toward the shadows, searching for Clara, before snapping back to meet Vincent’s cold, dead gaze. For a split second, a flicker of genuine panic crossed the corporate predator's face.

"Moretti," Julian said, forcing his voice to remain level, though a muscle twitched in his jaw. "I must admit, I underestimated your persistence. But walking out here alone—or rather, with your little neighborhood watch—won't change the fact that your wife's birthright legally belongs to my syndicate."

Vincent stepped forward, closing the distance between them with slow, deliberate strides until he was towering over Julian. Without a word, Vincent raised his right hand and slammed his fist directly into Julian’s jaw with the force of a falling anvil.

The crack echoed over the sound of the crashing waves. Julian staggered backward, slamming hard against the stone railing, blood instantly spilling from the corner of his split lip. He gasped, clutching his jaw, his aristocratic composure shattering into a million pieces.

"You arrogant son of a bitch," Julian spat, wiping the blood from his chin with the back of a shaking hand. "You think you can assault me and walk away? The federal prosecutors are already reviewing my filings. Within forty-eight hours, this entire estate—"

"Will be burned to the ground before I let you touch another brick of it," Vincent interrupted, his voice terrifyingly calm. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a thick stack of legal papers, tossing them carelessly onto the wet stones at Julian's feet.

Julian looked down. It wasn't the trust ledger. It was a complete federal indictment—signed, sealed, and stamped by the U.S. Attorney’s Office—detailing decades of financial fraud, insider trading, and corporate racketeering tied directly to Julian Vance and his shell companies.

"What... what is this?" Julian whispered, his face turning the color of ash.

"This is the end of the line, Julian," Vincent said, leaning down slightly until his face was inches from the other man's ear. "You spent years hiding behind lawyers and shell corporations, cleaning up the Stirlings' messes while building your own empire of extortion. But you made one fatal mistake."

May you like

"What mistake?" Julian choked out.

"You thought Clara was alone," Vincent replied straightening up. He signaled to the men behind him. "Take him away. The federal marshals are waiting at the bottom of the hill."
