Chapter 6 - The Digital Ghost

“Take him to the cellar,” Vincent ordered.

There was no shouting, no explosive violence. His voice was flat, empty of mercy.

Four armed guards moved in instantly. Richard Sterling struggled, his expensive Italian loafers dragging against the marble as they hauled him out of the chair. “You can’t do this, Moretti! My partners know I’m here! The FBI will raid this house before breakfast!”

“Let them come,” Vincent said, turning his back on the old man. “They’ll find an empty house and an open grave.”

The heavy steel door leading to the estate’s secure basement slammed shut, cutting off Richard’s muffled curses.

The foyer fell into an eerie, heavy silence. I stood on the lower steps, trembling all over. The pain in my back had subsided to a dull ache, but the emotional shock threatened to pull the ground from under my feet. Daniel. My sweet, gentle Daniel had been living in the jaws of this nightmare the entire time we were together.

Vincent walked up to the stairs. He extended a broad, steady hand toward me.

“Can you walk, Clara?”

I nodded, placing my smaller, trembling hand into his. His grip was warm, solid, anchoring me against the whirlwind of madness unraveling around us. He guided me back up to the guest suite, where Dr. Harris was waiting with a fresh bag of intravenous saline.

“She needs absolute calm, Vincent,” Dr. Harris warned, adjusting the line. “Her blood pressure is spiking. The placenta could abrupt under this level of distress.”

“I’m fine, doctor,” I whispered, lying back against the pillows. “I need to know the truth. I can’t sleep not knowing what Daniel did.”

Vincent sat on the edge of the mahogany desk, plugging the encrypted USB drive from Richard’s cane into his secure laptop. He motioned Daniel inside and closed the door.

“Dr. Harris is right,” Vincent said, glancing at me with uncharacteristic softness. “You and your daughter are the priority here. But you have a right to hear this.”

The laptop screen flickered. Vincent’s cybersecurity specialist had already bypassed the basic encryption, unlocking the drive’s contents.

Folders appeared on the display: *Financial Transfers, Medical Logs, Geneva Facility, Bennett Deliverables.*

Vincent opened the *Geneva Facility* folder.

Inside were dozen of surveillance photos. A secluded lakeside chalet surrounded by dense pine trees and high security fences. In several photos, a woman with long dark hair sat on a screened-in porch, holding a toddler with bouncy brown ringlets.

“Elena,” Vincent whispered. His fingers traced the glass of the screen.

The photos were time-stamped from three years ago, then two years ago, then eighteen months ago.

“She lived there for over two years,” Vincent said, piecing together the timeline with agonizing clarity. “Richard didn't kill her. He kept her isolated. He used the child to control her. He told her that if she ever contacted me, he would reveal her location to my family’s rival syndicates and tell them she had an heir.”

“He used my fear against her,” Vincent continued, his jaw tightening until the bone cracked. “Elena knew that if the Bratva or the Costa syndicate found out I had a child, Grace would be targeted for assassination. Richard convinced her that staying hidden in Lake Geneva was the only way to keep our daughter breathing.”

“Then what happened eighteen months ago?” I asked, leaning forward despite the strain in my ribs.

Vincent clicked on a text document labeled *Incident Report: Bennett*.

It was a classified debriefing written by Richard Sterling himself. Vincent read aloud:

*“On June 14th, operative Daniel Bennett was assigned to transfer the child, Grace Moretti, to an offshore adoption courier in Montreal following Elena Moretti’s medical decline. Bennett refused the assignment upon learning the courier was connected to an illegal child-trafficking ring in Eastern Europe.*

*Bennett neutralized three Sterling security personnel, breached the Geneva perimeter, and extracted both Elena and the four-year-old child. During the escape, Elena succumbed to late-stage respiratory failure resulting from untreated chronic pneumonia.*

*Before expiring, Elena entrusted the child to Bennett. Bennett has disappeared into the South Chicago industrial district. He is considered armed, dangerous, and in possession of compromising materials.”*

Tears flooded my eyes, cascading down my cheeks.

My husband wasn't a criminal. He wasn't a dirty blackmailer. He was the man who had risked everything to save a mother and her little girl from a fate worse than death.

“He saved her,” I sobbed into my hands. “Daniel saved your daughter.”

Vincent closed the laptop with a quiet, heavy snap. He stood up and walked to the side of my bed. Slowly, deliberately, the most feared mafia boss in Chicago sank to one knee beside my mattress.

He took my trembling hands in his own.

“Your husband died a hero, Clara,” Vincent said, his voice thick with emotion. “He gave his life to protect my blood. And in return, I swear to you on my mother’s soul and Elena’s memory: you and the child inside you will never want for anything again. You are under Moretti protection for the rest of your days.”

“Where is Grace now, Mr. Moretti?” I asked through my tears. “If Daniel took her… where did he put her?”

Before Vincent could answer, Elena’s phone on the desk chimed again.

Vincent rose and picked it up. He tapped the screen.

A live video feed popped up.

It showed a small, brightly painted preschool classroom. Sun streamed through large bay windows onto a colorful alphabet rug. In the center of the frame, a little girl with big, inquisitive blue eyes and curly dark hair was painting a watercolor picture of a golden sun.

Behind her stood a woman in a floral apron—a middle-aged woman with kind eyes.

A voice message accompanied the video:

**“Grace is safe with Daniel’s sister in Evanston. But Richard’s private investigators found the address twenty minutes ago. They are five minutes away from the school.”**

Vincent’s face went pale, then violently red.

“Daniel!” he bellowed toward the hallway. “Assemble the tactical team! We move to Evanston now!”
