Chapter 21 - Shadows on the Horizon

Six months passed like a golden dream.
The Moretti estate flourished under Clara’s gentle, artistic touch. The dark, forbidding rooms of the main house had been remodeled, flooded with natural light, vibrant floral arrangements, and the joyful, echoing laughter of Grace and Danielle as they ran through the hallways. Vincent had largely stepped back from the day-to-day aggression of corporate acquisitions, choosing instead to focus on philanthropic foundations and, most importantly, his family.
It was a crisp Tuesday afternoon when the mail was delivered.
Clara sat at the heavy oak desk in the sunroom, reviewing the charity gala guest list for the upcoming autumn fundraiser, while Vincent was out in the stables checking on the horses. The front doorbell rang—a sharp, single chime that echoed pleasantly through the foyer.
Thinking it was the local bakery delivery for the girls' afternoon snacks, Clara walked to the front door and pulled it open.
There was no delivery driver standing on the stone porch.
Instead, a plain, unadorned manila envelope lay on the welcome mat, resting directly beneath a single, freshly plucked black rose.
Clara’s breath hitched. A cold spike of dread pierced her chest, instantly shattering the warm illusion of peace they had built. She looked frantically around the driveway and the tree-lined perimeter road. The gravel drive was completely empty, save for the wind rustling the fallen leaves.
Slowly, her hands trembling, she bent down and picked up the envelope and the black rose. The stem had been stripped of all its thorns, leaving a smooth, dark surface that stained her fingertips with a faint residue of dark ink.
She carried the items into the foyer, closing the heavy oak door and locking it with a sharp, echoing click. With shaking fingers, she tore open the flap of the manila envelope and pulled out a single sheet of heavy black cardstock.

There was no typed message this time. Just a handwritten set of GPS coordinates, followed by three chilling words written in bold, slashing ink:
*“He is still watching.”*
