Chapter 13 - Rebuilding the Sanctuary

Three weeks later, the Reyes estate had been completely restored.

Contractors had worked around the clock to replace the shattered mahogany doors, install state-of-the-art titanium-reinforced security glass, and redesign the central foyer into a breathtaking architectural masterpiece filled with imported Italian marble and flowering indoor gardens.

Elena stood in the sunlit conservatory, trimming the white roses that climbed along the glass lattice. Her skin was golden, radiant with health. The faded yellow bruises that had once chained her to a life of terror were entirely gone, replaced by a delicate diamond tennis bracelet that Damian had slipped onto her wrist on her twenty-ninth birthday.

Footsteps echoed softly on the stone path behind her.

Damian approached, wearing a casual cashmere sweater and dark trousers. He looked younger, the harsh lines around his eyes softened by a peace he had never known in his thirty-eight years.

He reached around her waist, pulling her back against his chest, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder.

“You’re avoiding the kitchen,” Damian murmured, his voice rich and teasing. “Rosalind is baking your favorite lemon tart, and Sofia has already stolen two slices.”

Elena laughed—a clear, musical sound that filled the glass room with light. She turned in his embrace, resting her hands against the broad expanse of his chest.

“I was just thinking about how different my life was a month ago,” she whispered, looking up into his dark eyes with profound tenderness. “I was terrified of waking up. I prayed every night that God would just let me disappear so Sofia would be free.”

Damian’s expression turned fierce and tender. He reached up, cupping her face in his warm palms. “You survived a storm, Elena. Now, you get to live in the sunshine.”

“What about you, Damian?” she asked softly. “What about your world?”

Damian smiled gently. “Last week, I finalized the paperwork transferring fifty percent of my maritime logistics holdings into a legitimate, publicly traded enterprise. Christian is taking over the private security division. The old syndicate is being dismantled, Elena. I spent my whole life building an empire of fear because I thought that was the only way to keep what was mine safe.”

He leaned down, brushing his lips against hers with infinite sweetness. “Now, I only care about building a home worthy of you.”
