Chapter 7 - The Calm Before the Storm

Over the next two weeks, the Reyes estate transformed from a cold, silent fortress into a vibrant haven.

Sofia flourished under the care of the private physical therapists Damian hired. Within ten days, the color had returned to the young girl’s cheeks, and the sound of her laughter echoing down the grand marble hallways seemed to soften the hard edges of Damian’s stoic household.

Elena, however, refused to sit idle. Though Damian had explicitly relieved her of all cleaning duties, she insisted on helping Rosalind manage the estate’s daily operations. She arranged fresh flowers from the conservatory, coordinated the estate’s kitchen menus, and ensured Damian’s favorite dark roast coffee was ready every morning at precisely 6:45 a.m.

Only now, her hands no longer trembled.

One rainy Thursday evening, Elena couldn't sleep. The grandfather clock in the gallery chimed midnight as she walked down to the estate’s cavernous library, searching for a book to calm her racing thoughts.

As she pushed open the heavy oak doors, she stopped.

A single green banker’s lamp illuminated the center desk. Damian was there, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, a glass of scotch resting beside an open architectural blueprint. He looked exhausted, the sharp lines of his face carved deep with shadows.

“You’re awake late, Elena,” he said without looking up, his voice warm in the quiet room.

Elena stepped inside, closing the door softly. “I couldn't sleep. Sofia had a small flare-up in her knee tonight. Seeing her in pain... it always brings back the old memories.”

Damian set down his pencil and turned his chair toward her. “Come here.”

Elena walked over to the desk. Instead of keeping her distance as she used to, she stepped close to his side. Damian reached out, his warm, strong hand closing around hers, gently pulling her down onto the edge of the large desk beside him.

“The doctors assured me Sofia’s treatment plan is working,” Damian murmured, his thumb rhythmically stroking the back of her hand. “Her pain will lessen every week. You carry too much weight, Elena. Let me carry some of it.”

Elena looked down at their joined hands. For the first time, she noticed the faint, silver scars across Damian’s knuckles and forearm.

“You carry scars too, Damian,” she whispered, reaching out with her free hand to gently touch a pale line running along his wrist. “People call you ruthless. They whisper terrible things about what you do in the shadows.”

“Most of those whispers are true,” Damian admitted quietly, not flinching from her touch. “I grew up in a world where weakness meant death. My father taught me to strike first and strike without mercy. But when I look at you, Elena... I don't want to be the monster the city expects me to be. I just want to be a man worthy of keeping you safe.”

The vulnerability in his voice pierced straight through Elena’s heart. She leaned in, her eyes shining with unshed tears, and gently placed her lips against his cheek.

Damian’s breath hitched. He reached up, his large hand cupping the back of her neck, tilting her head until their lips met in a searing, breathless kiss.

It was neither rough nor hurried. It was a slow, reverent claiming, filled with all the unspoken promises of the past two weeks. Elena melted against him, her fingers tangling into his thick hair, feeling the fierce, protective thrum of his heartbeat echoing against her chest.

When they finally broke apart, both breathless, Damian rested his forehead against hers.

“Tomorrow night is the Annual Chicago Symphony Gala,” Damian whispered, his eyes blazing with fierce devotion. “The entire city will be there. The politicians, the moguls, the cartels. I want you at my side, Elena. As my guest. As my equal.”

Elena felt a shiver of nervous excitement ripple down her spine. “Are you sure, Damian? Once they see me with you, there’s no going back.”

May you like

Damian kissed her forehead softly. “I never plan on going back.”
