Chapter 16 - The Phantom Ledger

The ink on the Reyes-Cruz merger was barely dry when the first anonymous letter arrived at the Chicago headquarters. Elena was reviewing the quarterly logistics reports in her private office when a plain, cream-colored envelope slipped through the mail slot, carrying no return address. Inside lay a single sheet of heavy parchment bearing a string of alphanumeric codes and a watermark she hadn't seen since the night the Moretti empire collapsed: an embossed viper biting its own tail.

She froze, the sudden drop in temperature in the room mirroring the chill that crept up her spine. For a full year, Damian had scoured every dark corner of the underworld to ensure the remnants of the syndicate were buried deep. Sofia was safe, playing in the sunlit courtyards of the estate; the guards at the gates were elite veterans loyal to Damian’s core circle. Yet, right here in the center of their newly stabilized empire, the ghost of their past had breached the perimeter.

"Damian," Elena whispered into her encrypted desktop phone, her voice steady despite the adrenaline hammering against her ribs. "We have a visitor."

Within ten minutes, Damian burst through the double doors, his heavy wool overcoat swirling around his ankles like storm clouds. His sharp gray eyes scanned the room in a fraction of a second before locking onto the paper in Elena's hand. He crossed the distance between them in three long strides, taking the parchment from her fingers. As his eyes tracked the code, the muscle in his jaw ticked—a terrifying tell that Elena knew meant blood was about to be spilled.

"This isn't just a threat," Damian said, his voice dropping into that dark, gravelly register that commanded absolute obedience. "This is a ledger key. It points to a secondary offshore account the Morettis were supposed to have liquidated before the trial."

"Someone survived the purge," Elena said, stepping closer to him, her posture straightening as the old survival instincts flared back to life. She was no longer the trembling girl holding a porcelain cup; she was a woman forged in fire, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the King of Chicago. "And they want something more than money. They want the entire foundation we just built."

Damian looked down at her, a fierce, protective pride flashing in his eyes, mingled with a dangerous resolve. "Let them try to take it. We burned them out once, Elena. This time, we turn their ashes to dust."
