Chapter 19 - The Trap Springs

The rusted metal door of warehouse forty-two shrieked in protest as Damian kicked it inward with bone-shattering force. The cavernous space echoed with the sound, startling the two men standing near a stack of wooden shipping crates.

Judge Harrison’s chief of staff dropped a thick manila folder, his face draining of all color as Damian stepped out of the shadows, his silhouette framed by the amber haze of the harbor lights. Behind him, Elena moved with silent, feline grace, covering the exit route with absolute tactical precision.

"Director Vance," Damian said, his voice dripping with lethal irony. "I didn't realize the judiciary branch moonlighted as delivery boys for dead men."

Vance swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he raised them slowly to shoulder height. "Reyes. You shouldn't be here. This... this is bigger than you think. The syndicate didn't die when Lorenzo Moretti fell. They just changed their names."

"Names can be changed," Damian replied, closing the distance between them with terrifying speed, grabbing Vance by the lapels of his suit and lifting him off the floor with one hand. "But blood stains remain. Where is the ledger master?"

"I don't know!" Vance gasped, clawing desperately at Damian’s wrists. "I swear to God, I only take orders from a middleman known as 'The Architect.' He holds the keys to the offshore accounts. He’s planning a hostile takeover of your logistics network tomorrow morning at the city council meeting."

Elena stepped forward, her eyes narrowing as she retrieved the manila folder Vance had dropped. She flipped it open, scanning the handwritten annotations inside. "It’s not just a hostile takeover," she said, her voice dropping an octave as a horrifying realization hit her. "They’ve planted forged building permits and environmental violation claims on all of our active construction sites. Tomorrow, the city is going to slap a federal injunction on the entire Reyes-Cruz empire."

Damian let out a low, dangerous laugh—the laugh of a apex predator realizing the scale of the game being played against him. He dropped Vance to the concrete floor like a discarded rag.

"Let them try," Damian murmured, pulling out his encrypted satellite phone. "Marcus? Initiate Protocol Black. We aren't going to wait for them to strike tomorrow. We’re going to burn their entire foundation to the ground tonight."
