Chapter 17 - Whispers in the Boardroom

The emergency meeting of the Reyes-Cruz executive board was convened behind soundproof glass on the fortieth floor of the downtown tower. Outside, a heavy autumn mist rolled in from Lake Michigan, swallowing the skyline and casting a dull, monochromatic gray over the city. Inside, the tension was thick enough to cut with a diamond-tipped glass cutter.
Sat around the mahogany table were Damian’s most trusted lieutenants, alongside Elena’s financial auditors. At the head of the table sat Damian, his fingers steepened under his chin, listening in absolute silence as Marcus, their head of security, laid out the grim reality.
"The IP address originating the decryption request for that ledger key traces back to a secure terminal inside the municipal courthouse," Marcus reported, tapping a laser pointer against a digital schematic on the wall screen. "Someone inside the judicial system is helping them reassemble the old syndicate assets. Accounts frozen twelve months ago are suddenly active, being funneled through shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands."
"And the name on the primary holding entity?" Elena asked, leaning forward, her eyes sharp and analytical.
Marcus hesitated, exchanging a brief, cautious glance with Damian. "That’s the complication, Mrs. Reyes. The legal administrator listed on the trust papers is Judge Harrison."
A murmur of shock rippled through the boardroom. Judge Harrison was not just any magistrate; he was the federal judge who had presided over the Moretti racketeering trial, hailed publicly as a beacon of anti-corruption and civic integrity. If Harrison was compromised, the entire legal shield protecting Damian and Elena’s legitimate enterprises was built on quicksand.
"A wolf in magistrate's robes," Damian murmured, a cold, humorless smile touching the corner of his lips. "He thought he could inherit the throne while we were busy celebrating our peace. Marcus, I want a full audit of every ruling Harrison handed down in the last six months. Find the leverage."
"And if there is no leverage?" Marcus asked quietly.
May you like
Damian stood up, towering over the table, his presence casting a heavy shadow across the room. "Then we build a trap so wide and deep that even a federal judge won't be able to climb out of it."
