Chapter 10 - The Flying Monkeys

With Wanda sitting in a holding cell at the county precinct, the Miller family unleashed their final, desperate weapon: collective social terror.
By Sunday afternoon, my phone, email, and social media accounts were inundated with vitriol.
Judy, Wanda’s sister, left a six-minute voicemail screaming that I was an "evil, calculating sociopath" who had destroyed a seventy-year-old grandmother’s life over a minor parenting correction.
Keith sent a threatening email warning that if I didn't drop the charges, he would release "embarrassing private information" about my past to my design clients.
Even Mason’s distant cousins and high school friends began posting veiled attacks on local community Facebook groups, calling me an ungrateful gold-digger who had trapped Mason, drained his family, and weaponized the police to steal his daughter on Christmas Eve.
They were trying to break me. They thought that if they surrounded me with shame, fear, and isolation, I would fold, recant my statement, and beg for peace.
They didn't know who I was anymore.
On Monday morning, I sat beside Amanda Sterling in her office. Marcus was there too, projecting social media screenshots and voicemail transcripts onto a wall monitor.
"Notice how specific their language is," Marcus pointed out. "They’re all using the exact same phrasing: 'unstable,' 'gold-digger,' 'invented trauma.' This is a coordinated smear campaign orchestrated to taint the potential jury pool before the preliminary hearing."
Amanda took a sip of her espresso, utterly unbothered. "Keith Miller is an executive at a regional logistics firm, correct?"
"Yes," I answered.
"And Judy’s husband Dale runs an auto-dealership network that relies heavily on municipal fleet contracts?"
"Yes."
Amanda picked up her desk phone. "Let’s remind the Miller family what happens when you participate in witness intimidation and civil conspiracy."
Within two hours, Amanda dispatched formal Cease-and-Desist notices coupled with Litigation Hold demands to Keith, Judy, Dale, and five other extended family members.
The letters were brutal. They outlined that every text message, voicemail, and social media comment had been archived as evidence of felony witness tampering in an ongoing child abuse prosecution. Attached to Keith’s letter was a courtesy notification that his employer’s ethics compliance officer had been copied on the filing due to his use of corporate email servers to send threatening messages to a victim of domestic crime.
At 2:15 PM, Keith called Mason in a panicked fury. Marcus, who had legal authorization to monitor Mason’s communications under our emergency discovery order, listened in.
*"I'm out, Mason!"* Keith screamed through the phone. *"My HR department just suspended my clearance pending an internal review! Your wife has a shark for a lawyer! If you call me again, I’m blocking your number. You and Mom are on your own!"*
One by one, the flying monkeys vanished.
The Facebook posts were hastily deleted. The voicemails stopped. The fake solidarity of the Miller dynasty cracked under the first gust of real legal consequence.
They had thought I was weak because I had spent four years staying quiet, cooking meals, and trying to keep the peace.

They were about to learn that a mother protecting her child doesn't seek peace. She seeks unconditional surrender.
