Chapter 8 - The Hidden Ledger

Watching Mason frantically stuff gym socks and shirts into a duffel bag under the stern watch of two armed state troopers was the most cathartic experience of my life.

He tried to whisper to me in the bedroom hallway while the trooper looked on. "Shan, please. Mom pressured me. You know how she is. She controlled my trust fund, she controlled my father before he died... I was just trying to keep the peace!"

"You kept the peace by letting her hit Khloe," I said, standing with my arms crossed. "Pack your bag, Mason."

When the front door finally clicked shut behind him and the troopers escorted his car off the property, silence returned to my home.

The house was clean—Wanda’s hired maids had indeed scrubbed the dining room spotless, erasing the wine and gravy stains—but the air felt stale, polluted by years of emotional manipulation.

I didn't waste time resting.

Amanda’s investigator, a former federal fraud detective named Marcus, arrived thirty minutes later. We went straight down to Mason’s basement home office.

Mason’s desk was locked, but Marcus had a bypass pick that opened the heavy cherry-wood drawers in under thirty seconds.

Inside the bottom drawer, hidden behind stacks of old tax returns, Marcus pulled out a leather-bound journal and a secondary laptop that had never been connected to our home Wi-Fi network.

"Look at this," Marcus said, flipping through the pages of the journal.

It wasn't a diary. It was a ledger.

For four years, Wanda had been running an unlicensed, high-end antique and estate-sale brokerage through her interior design business, laundering cash payments through private auctions to avoid state sales tax and federal income reporting.

And Mason, an executive VP at a regional commercial lending firm, had been creating fictitious collateral documents to back Wanda’s business loans.

"They weren't just stealing your mother’s inheritance, Shannon," Marcus said, scrolling through the offline laptop’s QuickBooks files. "They were using you as the ultimate legal firewall. Mason put the primary liability for the fraudulent business loans under the LLC that held your family's home."

"If the business went under..." I whispered, cold horror washing over me.

"The bank would seize this house, Wanda’s debts would be wiped clean through bankruptcy, and Mason would walk away clean while you were left legally liable for the default," Marcus confirmed. "This wasn't just narcissism. This was premeditated financial ruin."

My hands shook, but not from fear. From rage.

I pulled out my phone and called Amanda immediately. "Amanda. We have the offline books. We have the ledger. We have five years of tax fraud, loan fraud, and forged signatures."

On the other end of the line, Amanda let out a low, satisfied laugh. "Copy every single file onto three encrypted flash drives, Shannon. Tomorrow morning, we aren't just going to family court. We're paying a visit to the federal prosecutor's office."
