Chapter 3 - The Cold Examination

"Mason, you liar!" The scream tore out of my throat before I could stop it. "You sat right there! You watched her pin her down!"
"Ma'am, please lower your voice," Officer Hayes instructed calmly, though his eyes never left Mason's shifting posture.
Wanda immediately chimed in, her voice dripping with practiced sweetness. "Officers, you must understand. My daughter-in-law has suffered from severe postpartum anxiety. She’s been under tremendous stress hosting dinner. Khloe was running through the house, tripped on the Persian runner, and took a terrible tumble. I dropped to the floor instantly to keep her neck stabilized. Shannon walked in, misunderstood the entire scene, and went completely violent."
Wanda pointed a trembling, manicured finger at the ruined dining room. "Look at what she did to our home. She threw our Christmas dinner across the room. She’s dangerous. If anyone needs to be evaluated tonight, it is Shannon."
I held Khloe tighter, my heart pounding like a war drum. "Officer, look at the mark on her face. That is not from the flat wood of a sideboard. That is a handprint. Look at the fingers."
Officer Vance leaned closer to Khloe. She pulled a penlight from her tactical vest and gently illuminated the toddler's cheek. "Sweetheart, can you tell me what happened?"
Khloe sniffled, burying her wet nose into my collar. In a tiny, fragile whisper that cut through the silence of the room, she spoke: "Grandma hit. Grandma mean."
Wanda’s face twisted in outrage. "She’s being coached! A two-year-old doesn't know what she's saying!"
"That’s enough, ma'am," Officer Vance said sharply. She stood up, her posture rigid. "An EMT unit is pulling up right now. Mrs. Miller, I want you and your daughter in the ambulance so the paramedics can document these injuries under proper medical lighting."
"She is not taking my daughter out of this house," Mason snapped, stepping forward aggressively. "I am her father, and I do not consent to—"
"Sir, take two steps back right now," Officer Hayes commanded, placing his hand firmly on his duty belt. "Interfering with a child welfare investigation is an arrestable offense. Do you want to spend Christmas Eve in county lockup?"
Mason swallowed hard, his bravado instantly evaporating. He stepped back beside his mother, casting a venomous glare at me.
Paramedics arrived with a pediatric kit. Inside the quiet, sterile warmth of the ambulance, the paramedic, a kind woman named Sarah, took high-resolution digital photographs of Khloe’s cheek, jaw, and the slight bruising developing on her lower back where Wanda’s knee had pinned her down.
"This is consistent with blunt force trauma caused by an adult hand," Sarah noted into her tablet, her voice heavy with disgust. "The linear contusions across the zygomatic arch match fingers. There are also contusions along the lumbar spine consistent with forcible restraint. We need to take her to the pediatric ER at St. Jude’s for a full skeletal survey and clearance."
"I'm coming with her," I said firmly.
"Of course you are, Mama," Sarah said gently.
As the ambulance doors prepared to close, Mason walked up to the bumper, his phone pressed to his ear. He tapped on the glass.
I rolled the window down two inches.
"If you get in that ambulance and file a formal report, Shannon, we are done," Mason whispered through the crack, his voice dripping with venom. "Do you hear me? You will walk away with nothing. My mother has the best lawyers in the state. You will never see a dime, and I will take Khloe from you for parental alienation."
I looked at the man I had loved for six years. I didn't see my husband anymore. I saw a spineless coward who had sacrificed his daughter to appease an evil matriarch.
"Then call your lawyers, Mason," I said quietly. "Because you’re going to need them."

I rolled the window up and told the driver to go.
