Chapter 9 - The Arrest at Church

Sunday morning, December 29th, was crisp and sunny.

St. Michael’s Episcopal Church was the epicenter of Wanda Miller’s social universe. For twenty years, she had served on the parish committee, directed the altar guild, and used the Sunday coffee hour to hold court among the town’s wealthiest families.

She arrived in her spotless Mercedes, wearing an emerald green wool coat with a fox-fur collar. Keith and Tracy walked on one side of her; Mason, looking disheveled and hollow-eyed after three nights sleeping on Keith’s basement pull-out couch, trailed behind.

Wanda stood in the vestibule, smiling regally and greeting town council members, playing the role of the devoted, dignified matriarch who was enduring a "private family trial."

"We’re just praying for Shannon," Wanda was overheard telling the mayor’s wife, dabbing a theatrical, tearless eye with a lace handkerchief. "Postpartum depression is such a tragic, unpredictable illness. We only hope she gets the psychiatric help she so desperately needs before she harms our sweet Khloe again."

The mayor’s wife murmured sympathetic condolences. "Oh, Wanda, you are such a rock for that family..."

The church bells began to chime 10:00 AM.

Suddenly, two unmarked cruisers and a county sheriff’s patrol vehicle pulled smoothly into the church circular driveway, blocking Wanda’s Mercedes.

Four officers stepped out. Among them were Officer Hayes and Detective Ramirez from the county’s Special Victims Unit.

The heavy wooden doors of the church swung wide open. The congregation in the vestibule fell instantly silent as the sound of tactical boots echoed against the stone floor.

Detective Ramirez walked straight toward the foyer, unhooking a set of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Wanda Miller?" Ramirez’s voice boomed across the vaulted ceiling.

Wanda turned, her face freezing into a brittle, condescending mask. "Officer, what is the meaning of this? We are about to begin Sunday service. If this is about Shannon’s ridiculous allegations, my brother-in-law Arthur has already—"

"Wanda Miller, you are under arrest pursuant to an active warrant issued by the State of Connecticut," Ramirez interrupted loudly, his voice carrying clearly into the sanctuary where two hundred parishioners sat in stunned silence. "You are charged with Risk of Injury to a Minor, Third-Degree Assault, and Tampering with Physical Evidence."

A collective gasp rippled through the vestibule.

"What?!" Wanda shrieked, backing away into the umbrella stand. "This is preposterous! Mason, tell them! Keith!"

Keith took a fast step backward, deliberately putting two elderly parishioners between himself and his mother. He wasn't going to go down with her.

Mason stepped forward, his voice cracking. "Officers, you can't do this here! Not at our church!"

Detective Ramirez didn't even look at Mason. Officer Hayes stepped behind Wanda, grabbed her frail-looking wrists, and clicked the cold steel handcuffs firmly around them.

"You have the right to remain silent," Hayes recited smoothly, pulling Wanda’s hands behind her back. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

"Get your hands off me!" Wanda screamed, her dignified facade entirely shattering into shrill, ugly hysteria. "Do you know who I am?! Arthur! Call Arthur! Shannon, you miserable little bitch, I will ruin you! I will take that child and leave you to rot in the gutter!"

The pristine, holy vestibule echoed with her profanities. Parishioners recoiled in disgust, staring at the manicured socialite thrashing wildly against the police officers.

Two hundred people watched as Wanda Miller was marched down the stone steps in handcuffs, her fox-fur collar askew, and shoved into the back of a marked police cruiser.
