Chapter 14 - Wanda's Last Stand

Desperation makes dangerous people reckless.

Facing federal prison, financial ruin, and total social annihilation, Wanda decided on one final, catastrophic gamble.

In her twisted, narcissistic mind, if she could just get Khloe alone—if she could take her granddaughter and flee to her sister’s remote cabin in northern New Hampshire—she could force a renegotiation. She genuinely believed that holding the child would give her leverage against the prosecution.

On a rainy Thursday in early February, Wanda violated her bail conditions.

She rented an untraceable sedan using a fake ID Arthur had confiscated years ago from an old court case. She tracked my schedule, knowing that every Thursday at 3:30 PM, Sarah brought Khloe home from the toddler gymnastics center.

I was at my office downtown finalizing a major graphic design branding contract—my business had quadrupled in revenue since I reclaimed my independence—when my phone buzzed with an urgent notification from our home security system.

*Motion detected: Perimeter Gate.*

*Motion detected: Rear Patio.*

I opened the live camera feed on my phone.

My blood ran cold.

Wanda was standing at the back sliding door of my home, wearing a dark rain poncho and carrying a heavy crowbar.

She didn't know that after the Christmas incident, Marcus had reinforced every entry point with reinforced steel deadbolts, shatterproof laminated glass, and silent panic sensors directly tied to the county dispatch.

And more importantly: Khloe wasn't home. Sarah had taken her to the public library for story hour forty-five minutes early.

I hit the silent alarm trigger on the app and dialed Detective Ramirez directly. "She's at my house. Wanda is breaking in."

*"We have units two blocks away on routine patrol, Shannon! Stay away from the house!"*

Through the high-definition security camera, I watched Wanda smash the crowbar against the sliding glass door. The laminated glass cracked into a spiderweb pattern, but it did not shatter.

Infuriated, Wanda slammed her body against the frame, screaming incoherently.

Suddenly, the screech of tires echoed through the camera’s audio feed.

Two county cruisers roared into the driveway, followed by an unmarked SUV. Four officers leaped out, sidearms drawn.

"Drop the weapon! Drop it right now!"

Wanda spun around, the crowbar slipping from her wet gloves. She looked like a cornered wild animal, her face contorted with unhinged fury.

She didn't surrender with dignity. She lunged toward Detective Ramirez, screaming obscenities, trying to claw his face with her fingernails.

Ramirez swept her legs out from under her in one clean, tactical motion.

Wanda slammed facedown onto the wet stone patio—the exact same stone patio where she had once held court sipping mimosas. The officers pinned her arms behind her back, clicked the heavy steel cuffs into place, and hauled her to her feet.

She was soaking wet, covered in mud and pine needles, screaming into the gray sky as the rain washed away the last traces of her manufactured elegance.

Her bail was formally revoked twenty minutes later. There would be no more country club dinners. No more luxury cars.
