Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Driveway

At 1:30 PM on December 26th, two marked state trooper cruisers pulled into the driveway of 44 Elmwood Terrace.
Behind them was my attorney’s black sedan, carrying me and Amanda. Khloe was safely settled at an accredited drop-in daycare center under the direct watch of an off-duty police officer Amanda had hired for private security.
As we stepped out of the car, the front door of the house swung open.
Mason stepped onto the porch, looking smug. He had changed into a clean Ralph Lauren sweater, holding a folder of his own. Behind him in the foyer stood Wanda and Arthur, the retired judge brother-in-law, looking like a team of aristocrats preparing to dismiss a minor annoyance.
"Well, well," Mason sneered, walking down the front steps. "You finally decided to show up. Where is my daughter, Shannon? Hand her over, or Arthur here will have you cited for custodial interference."
Arthur stepped forward, giving a condescending, grandfatherly smile. "Now, Shannon, let’s be sensible. As a former magistrate, I can assure you that running away with a child during the holidays reflects terribly on a mother's fitness. If you step inside, we can draft an amicable separation agreement without involving the courts."
Neither of them had noticed the state troopers walking briskly behind Amanda and me.
"Mr. Mason Miller?" Trooper Briggs asked, stepping in front of Mason.
Mason blinked, startled. "Yes? Officers, my wife has unlawfully removed my daughter from—"
"Sir, you are being served with an emergency ex-parte order of protection issued by the Fairfield County Superior Court," Trooper Briggs announced, slapping a thick white legal document into Mason’s chest. "You have twenty minutes to gather one bag of essential personal clothing and vacate the premises."
Mason’s jaw dropped. "Vacate? This is MY house!"
"The deed and original purchase funds originated from Mrs. Miller’s familial estate," Amanda stepped forward, her voice cutting through the winter air like a razor. "Furthermore, the court has granted Shannon Miller exclusive temporary possession of the marital residence. You are ordered to surrender all house keys, garage openers, and vehicle access immediately."
Wanda marched down the porch steps, her face livid. "This is an outrage! Arthur, do something! Who is the presiding judge?!"
"Judge Elena Martinez," Amanda answered, turning her icy gaze onto Wanda. "And Mrs. Wanda Miller, you might want to step back into the driveway. Because you are currently within fifty feet of Shannon Miller, which constitutes a Class D felony violation of the restraining order I am holding in my hand."
Wanda gasped, stumbling backward as if she had been slapped. "Arthur!"
Arthur looked at the document in Mason’s hands, saw the judge's signature, and his smug smile completely vanished. He leaned toward Wanda and muttered under his breath, "Back away, Wanda. Martinez doesn't play games. Back away right now."
"You forged my signature, Mason," I said, stepping forward. My voice was calm, devoid of the fear he had spent years cultivating in me. "A quarter of a million dollars from the home equity line. Did you really think Amanda’s forensic accountants wouldn't find the wire transfer to your mother’s shell company within forty-eight hours?"
Mason went ash-white. His eyes darted to his mother, then to Arthur, then to the troopers. "Shannon... that was an investment. It was for our family’s future—"

"You stole from our daughter," I said, locking eyes with him. "You let your mother strike our baby, you lied to the police, and you robbed her college fund. You have nineteen minutes left to pack your bag."
