Chapter 15 - The Freezing of the Assets

With Wanda locked away without bail, the final dominoes fell with terrifying speed.

Amanda Sterling moved like a surgical strike team through the probate and chancery courts. Within forty-eight hours of Wanda’s felony arrest for attempted burglary and bail violation, Amanda secured a comprehensive Federal Mareva Injunction—freezing every bank account, trust fund, and investment vehicle associated with Wanda, Mason, and their shell companies.

Mason was living out of a cheap, moldy studio apartment near the industrial district. Without his executive salary, with his credit cards canceled, and facing impending federal indictment, he was drowning.

He showed up at Amanda’s office on Friday afternoon, accompanied by a public defender.

He didn't look like the arrogant husband who had sat at the head of my Christmas table with a glass of wine. He wore a frayed jacket, his hair was greasy, and his eyes were hollow with defeat.

I sat at the end of the long conference table, flanked by Amanda and Marcus.

"Shannon," Mason began, his voice cracking with dry exhaustion. "I signed it."

He pushed a thick legal packet across the mahogany surface.

It was the complete, unconditional divorce settlement and parental surrender agreement.

He had signed away every single claim to our marital home. He had assigned all rights, title, and equity of 44 Elmwood Terrace exclusively to me and Khloe’s trust.

He surrendered his equity in his 401(k) to pay off the forged second mortgage in full.

And most importantly: he voluntarily relinquished his parental rights, agreeing to a complete and permanent severance of legal custody.

"I can't fight you anymore, Shannon," Mason whispered, staring down at his scarred, trembling hands. "The federal prosecutor offered me a plea deal. If I testify against Mom regarding the wire fraud and the shell company accounts, they’ll recommend three years in minimum security instead of ten."

I looked at the documents. Amanda reviewed every initial, every notary stamp, every addendum. She looked up at me and gave a slow, definitive nod.

"Why, Mason?" I asked quietly, looking into the eyes of the man I had once thought would protect our family. "All you had to do on Christmas Eve was stand up. All you had to do was put down your glass and tell your mother 'no.'"

A single tear cut through the grime on Mason’s cheek.

"She owned me, Shannon," he choked out. "She’s owned me my entire life. I was terrified of her. I thought if I just let her have her way, she’d leave us alone."

"You sacrificed your daughter to save yourself," I said, my voice steady and free of anger. "And in the end, you lost everything anyway."

I picked up the pen and signed my name on the final line.

"Goodbye, Mason."

He stood up slowly, clutching his threadbare jacket around his chest, and walked out of the room. He didn't look back.
