Chapter 2 - The Cracks in the Mask

The entire garden turned into a frozen tableau. The breeze rustled the pastel streamers overhead, but no one breathed.
Valerie’s arms stayed frozen in mid-air, her painted smile instantly rigid, cracking like cheap plaster. Color drained rapidly from Marco’s face, leaving him looking sickly green under the afternoon glare.
"Leo, sweetheart, don't tell lies—" Valerie stammered, dropping her hands and trying to force a soft, maternal chuckle. "Mommy gave you candy, remember? You’re just confused—"
"No!" Leo shouted, his small chest heaving beneath his crisp white birthday shirt. He stepped back toward me, wrapping his small arms around my knees. "Daddy told me to stay in the closet and not make a peep while he and the red-dress lady did loud whispering in the other room! She took my dinosaur and said if I told Mommy, she’d throw my toys in the garbage!"
A chorus of shocked murmurs erupted into a roar among the guests. My father surged forward from the VIP table, his fists clenched, while my brother-in-law pulled out his phone, loudly dialing security.
"You miserable son of a bitch," my father snarled, pointing a trembling finger at Marco. "You locked my grandson in a closet to carry out an affair?"
"It’s a lie!" Marco yelled, panic finally breaking through his smug facade. His voice was ragged, cracking into the microphone before he shoved it away. "Andrea coached him! She’s poisoning his mind! She knew this day was coming, so she brainwashed a five-year-old child to protect her stolen empire!"
Valerie scrambled to her feet, her red dress hitching up ungracefully as her expensive stilettos sank into the damp turf. "Andrea, you're pathetic! Using a baby as a human shield? I have proof! I have biological claims!"
"Security!" I shouted, my voice cutting through the chaos with razor-sharp authority.
Four burly men in black suits, hired to monitor the perimeter, sprinted onto the lawn.
"Get these two off my property," I commanded, staring down Marco with eyes that felt like flint. "Immediately. If either of them takes one step closer to my son, tackle them to the ground and have them arrested for criminal trespass."
"Your property?" Marco barked, attempting to recover his footing. He thrust the thick Manila folder in the air, his eyes wild. "Check the land registry, Andrea! Check the corporate filings! You signed over power of attorney to me three weeks ago when you took that business trip to Milan! I transferred this estate into a family trust where I am the sole trustee! And as of eight o’clock this morning, your company accounts are frozen under an audit petition for commercial fraud!"
A cold spike of fear stabbed through my gut, but I didn't flinch. I remembered the stack of routine trade documents Marco had asked me to review late one night before my flight, claiming they were customs declarations for our newest diamond shipment. My hands trembled slightly against Leo’s shoulders, but I masked it instantly.
"You forged my signature," I whispered, the horrifying truth clicking into place.
"Prove it in probate court, darling," Valerie sneered, pulling a designer compact from her clutch to check her eyeliner, desperate to project dominance despite her shaking hands. "You’re broke, Andrea. And by tomorrow morning, Child Protective Services will have an emergency complaint on their desk about your psychological instability. Say goodbye to your boy."
The security guards moved in, grabbing Marco’s arms.
"Get your hands off me! I own this damn house!" Marco roared, thrashing violently as the guards shoved him and Valerie down the stone pathway toward the front gate. Valerie shrieked as her heel snapped on the cobblestones, forcing her to limp, cursing violently as our guests watched in absolute disgust, recording every second on their smartphones.
The iron gates slammed shut behind them with a definitive clang.
The garden fell into an uneasy, breathless quiet. My guests were looking at me—some with profound pity, others with the nervous curiosity of people who had just witnessed a royal disaster.
Leo looked up at me, tears welling in his large hazel eyes. "Mommy... am I in trouble?"
I dropped to my knees, pulling him into my chest so hard I could feel the rapid flutter of his heartbeat. "No, my brave boy. You are not in trouble. You just saved our lives."
May you like
I kissed the top of his head, but as I looked across the ruined party—the abandoned gifts, the overturned glasses, the whispers among my high-profile investors—I knew this was only the first shot in a war designed to destroy everything I had ever loved.
