Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

By the next morning, the world had turned completely upside down.

When I opened the front curtains, half a dozen news vans were parked along the perimeter fence, telephoto lenses aimed at the second-floor windows. Protestors holding crudely painted signs reading "GIVE THE BABY BACK" and "BOYCOTT LUMIÈRE" stood beside the gates, spurred on by Valerie’s overnight internet campaign.

My flagship store on Fifth Avenue had been vandalized with red spray paint at dawn. Three major department stores had already sent formal notices suspending their distribution contracts pending the outcome of the legal investigation.

"Mommy, why are those people yelling outside?" Leo asked, rubbing his eyes as he walked into the kitchen in his dinosaur pajamas.

I crouched down, forcing a bright, warm smile onto my face as I smoothed back his tangled morning hair. "They're just noisy birds, my sweet boy. Today, we're going on an adventure. Uncle Julian is going to take us to a very special doctor’s office to take a little test, and then we're going to stay at a secret fortress for a few days."

"A fortress with a moat?" Leo asked, his eyes widening.

"Even better," I whispered, kissing his forehead. "A fortress with room service and heated swimming pools."

At 9:30 AM, an armored town car with tinted windows pulled into the underground garage beneath my estate. Julian had arranged for an indisputable, triple-verified DNA test to be conducted at an independent, state-accredited medical laboratory under strict chain of custody. No corporate clinic, no room for Marco's bribes.

When we arrived at the forensic facility, the head geneticist, Dr. Eleanor Sterling, greeted us in a private room.

"Mrs. Chen, we understand the sensitivity of this case," Dr. Sterling said politely. "We are collecting buccal swabs and blood samples from both you and your son. Two independent technicians will process the samples under continuous video recording. The preliminary results will be ready in twenty-four hours."

As the cotton swab brushed the inside of Leo’s cheek, my phone rang. It was an unknown number, but I knew the caller.

I answered and held the phone to my ear without speaking.

"Enjoying the morning news, Andrea?" Marco’s smug, oily voice purred through the receiver.

"I hope you're enjoying your last few days of freedom, Marco," I replied coldly, stepping into the corridor. "Because every dollar you took from Starlight Holdings is documented. Every forged signature is sitting with a forensic handwriting examiner."

Marco chuckled, a low, arrogant sound. "Documents take months to litigate, Andrea. But public execution takes hours. Did you see the stock price of your holding company this morning? Down forty percent. Your retail partners are dropping like flies. You’re bleeding out, sweetheart."

"What do you want, Marco?"

"A full corporate transfer," he said, dropping all pretense of grief or righteousness. "You sign over Lumière Jewels to an offshore entity under my name. You deed the estate to me. In exchange, Valerie and I will sign an NDA, drop the custody suit, and announce that this was all a 'tragic misunderstanding' regarding surrogacy paperwork. You get to keep your kid. You just leave the money."

"You want me to hand over the company I built with my bare hands so you and a thieving secretary can play billionaire?"

"You have twenty-four hours," Marco said, his voice turning vicious. "If you don't sign by noon tomorrow at the emergency court hearing, Valerie’s lawyer will release the birth certificate we filed with the state registrar. And once that becomes public record, Child Protective Services will place Leo into foster care while the custody battle drags on for years. You know the system, Andrea. Do you really want your precious little boy sitting in a state shelter while you fight for your dignity?"

The line went dead.

My breath hitched. Foster care. The sheer cruelty of the threat made my blood boil with a rage so profound it tasted like copper. He didn't care about Leo. He was willing to toss his own five-year-old son into a traumatic state system just to use him as a financial bargaining chip.

Julian stepped out of the lab, his face set in stone. "The samples are sealed and logged. What did he say?"

"He offered a deal," I said, staring at the blank hospital wall. "My life’s work in exchange for my son."

Julian adjusted his glasses. "And what did you say?"

May you like

"I didn't say anything," I replied, turning toward him with absolute resolve. "Because I don't negotiate with terrorists. Call our private investigator. I want Valerie’s entire life unraveled by nightfall. Where she was five years ago, who she slept with, every bank account, every plane ticket. I want the ground beneath their feet to crack wide open."
