Chapter 3 - The Fortress of Paper

By eight o’clock that evening, the birthday guests had cleared out. The caterers had packed away the half-eaten carousel cake and the crushed flowers, leaving the massive living room echoing and barren.

Leo was asleep upstairs in his bedroom, guarded by two private security personnel I had personally vetted through an elite firm. Beside me at the grand mahogany dining table sat Julian Vance, my corporate attorney and closest confidant since my university days.

Julian adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, his brow deeply furrowed over a glowing laptop screen. Piles of bank statements, corporate charters, and property deeds lay strewn across the table.

"Andrea," Julian began, his voice grim. "It’s worse than we thought. Marco didn't just forge a standard power of attorney. He used a sophisticated digital notary scam to register a living trust in Delaware."

"What about Lumière Jewels?" I asked, gripping a cold cup of black coffee. "Can he touch the operational capital?"

"He already tried," Julian replied, turning the screen toward me. "At 8:15 AM, he submitted an emergency filing claiming you were mentally incapacitated and engaged in corporate embezzlement. Because he was listed as an alternate signatory on the primary operating account, the bank triggered an automatic seventy-two-hour administrative freeze while their risk department investigates."

I let out a bitter, disbelieving laugh. "I built that brand from a bedroom in Brooklyn. Marco was a failed real estate agent drowning in half a million dollars of gambling debt when I met him. I paid off his loans. I bought his suits. I gave him a seat at my board table out of love. And he’s trying to throw me into the street?"

"He’s not working alone," Julian said quietly. "Look at these wire transfers from the boutique's marketing budget over the last eighteen months. Small increments—nine thousand dollars, eight thousand five hundred. Always under the ten-thousand-dollar federal reporting threshold. Totaling nearly two point four million dollars."

"Valerie," I hissed.

"Exactly. The receiving accounts trace back to an offshore shell company called ‘Starlight Holdings,’ registered in the Cayman Islands. Valerie is the beneficial owner, but Marco has signing authority." Julian looked up, his expression hardening. "They’ve been planning this for over two years, Andrea. They wanted to strip your liquidity, hit you with a custody scandal, and force a quick, sealed settlement where you walk away with nothing just to keep Leo."

"He will never take my son," I said, my voice dropping an octave, cold and unyielding. "I gave birth to Leo. The idea that Valerie was a surrogate is an absolute, laughable absurdity. What could they possibly gain by fabricating such a blatant lie?"

"In court? Nothing long-term," Julian cautioned. "But in the court of public opinion? Everything. If they create enough reasonable doubt and media chaos, a judge might grant Marco temporary sole custody pending a paternity and maternity hearing. And if Marco has custody, he can petition the court for child support, exclusive occupancy of this estate, and a monthly allowance drawn directly from your frozen business assets."

Right on cue, Julian’s phone buzzed aggressively against the mahogany wood. Then mine buzzed. Then a barrage of notifications chimed simultaneously.

I grabbed my phone. A link from a major viral celebrity gossip blog was plastered across social media.

The headline blared: **"LUXURY JEWELRY MOGUL ANDREA CHEN ACCUSED OF BUYING SECRET BABY: FORMER ASSISTANT CLAIMS HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND CUSTODY THEFT."**

Attached was a heavily edited video shot from the garden gate just hours ago. Valerie was sitting in the front seat of Marco’s car, sobbing hysterically into the camera, claiming she had been coerced by my immense wealth, forced to surrender her newborn five years ago under threat of death. Marco was beside her, looking noble and solemn, holding up what appeared to be an official hospital birth certificate with Valerie's name listed under 'Mother.'

Below the video, the comment section was an inferno. Thousands of people were calling for my immediate arrest, demanding boycotts of Lumière Jewels, and labeling me a monster.

"They're moving faster than I anticipated," Julian muttered, scrolling through the vile comments.

"Let them move," I said, setting my phone face down. My hands were no longer shaking. A cold, surgical clarity had settled into my bones. "They think I’m an emotional socialite who will break down and write a check to protect her public image. They forgot that before I had a diamond brand, I spent four years surviving the cutthroat diamond exchanges of Antwerp and Tel Aviv. If Marco and Valerie want a war of blood and paper, I will give them an annihilation."
