Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Ambush

The headquarters of Lumière Jewels occupied the entire top three floors of a sleek glass tower on Madison Avenue.
At 9:55 AM, the executive boardroom was packed to maximum capacity. The mahogany conference table was surrounded by the company’s primary shareholders, high-profile venture capitalists, and the senior vice presidents.
At the head of the table sat Marco.
He looked radiant, exuding the smug confidence of a conqueror. He wore an Italian bespoke suit, an eighteen-karat gold Rolex on his wrist—bought with my money—and had his hands clasped casually over a thick leather binder.
Beside him sat three corporate attorneys from a predatory takeover firm.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Marco announced, clearing his throat and checking his watch with a theatrical sigh. "It is ten o’clock. As you know, my wife, Andrea, has failed to appear. Given the catastrophic media scandal surrounding her personal life, the forty percent collapse of our stock value over the last forty-eight hours, and the ongoing federal inquiries into her questionable business dealings, our corporate bylaws are clear."
The board members looked at each other with tense, troubled expressions. Some looked guilty; others looked purely opportunistic.
"Under Article Nine, Section Four," Marco continued, his voice ringing with rehearsed authority, "the board may vote by simple majority to remove the Chief Executive Officer in the event of gross moral turpitude or severe brand endangerment. With the twenty-five percent voting proxy entrusted to me by the family trust, and the fifteen percent held by our institutional partners, I move that we formally terminate Andrea Chen as CEO and Chairman of the Board, effective immediately."
"Seconded," one of Marco’s bought board members piped up immediately.
"All those in favor—" Marco began, raising his hand, a broad, triumphant grin spreading across his face.
*BAM.*
The heavy double oak doors of the boardroom were thrown open so hard they rebounded off the wall with the sound of a gunshot.
Marco’s words choked in his throat.
I walked into the boardroom.
I was flanked by Julian Vance on my right, Detective Diaz on my left, and two uniformed federal marshals behind me. But the person walking directly behind Julian caused half the board members to gasp and rise from their seats.
It was Valerie Stone, handcuffed, weeping silently, guarded by an armed female officer.
Marco’s face lost every shred of color. His jaw dropped, his hands freezing in mid-air. "Valerie... what... what is this?"
"I believe you were in the middle of a vote, Marco," I said, my voice smooth, resonant, and completely devoid of fear. I walked directly down the center of the room, the sharp click of my heels commanding the silence like a metronome of doom.
I stopped at the opposite end of the long conference table, resting both hands flat against the polished wood, staring straight into the eyes of the man who had tried to steal my life.
"Andrea, this is an executive session!" Marco sputtered, panic flaring behind his eyes as he scrambled to regain his footing. "You cannot bring criminals and police into a private shareholder meeting! Security, remove these people!"
"The security team answers to me, Marco," I replied coldly. "They’ve answered to me since seven o’clock this morning, when the temporary administrative freeze on my company accounts was lifted by order of the Federal Reserve Banking Commission."
Julian stepped forward, slamming a thick stack of court orders and certified bank audit reports onto the center of the table.
"For the benefit of the board," Julian announced loudly, "we present the preliminary findings of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. Over the past twenty-four months, Marco Chen, in direct criminal conspiracy with Valerie Stone, embezzled four point two million dollars from Lumière Jewels’ international operating budget through an offshore front company known as Starlight Holdings."
A chorus of furious shouts broke out among the board members.
"That's a lie! It’s a frame-up!" Marco roared, slamming his fists on the table, knocking over his glass of water. "She's manufacturing evidence! She knew I was going to oust her today!"
"Is it a lie, Marco?" Detective Diaz stepped forward, pulling a small remote from his pocket and clicking it toward the giant projection screen at the front of the room.
The screen lit up instantly.
A high-definition audio and video file began to play. It was the security footage from Penthouse 4B recorded just two hours ago. Valerie’s voice echoed through the high-end speakers, crystal clear, sobbing and detailing every single element of the plot: the stolen designs, the forged power of attorney, the fake surrogacy paperwork, the planned escape to Dubai, and the horrific afternoon when Marco locked five-year-old Leo into a dark closet.
"No... turn it off! Turn it off!" Marco screamed, lunging across the table to grab the projector cord.
A federal marshal grabbed his shoulder, forcing him violently back into his leather chair.
"Sit down, Mr. Chen," the marshal barked.
Marco looked around the room, wild-eyed, panting like a cornered beast. The board members who had supported him moments ago were now shrinking away from him in sheer disgust, looking at him as if he were a poisonous insect.

"You're done, Marco," I said softly across the quiet room. "The game is over."
