Chapter 7 - The Snake Eats Its Tail

Greed is a predictable poison. It convinces the thief that everyone else is as stupid as they are, and it makes honor impossible among villains.

Sitting in the back of Julian’s town car outside the St. Regis Hotel, I watched the rain stream down the tinted glass. It was barely dawn. Beside me, Detective Marcus Diaz of the Manhattan Financial Crimes Division reviewed the audio recordings Chloe had provided, along with the detailed transaction records from my black ledger.

"Mrs. Chen, this ledger gives us probable cause for a dozen counts of wire fraud, corporate espionage, and grand larceny," Detective Diaz said, closing the leather-bound book. "Marco Chen and Valerie Stone have been running a textbook embezzlement scheme. But if we move on Valerie now, Marco might get spooked and skip his appearance at the emergency shareholder meeting at ten."

"We don't arrest Valerie yet," I said calmly, adjusting my watch. "We corner her. We let her know the trap has snapped shut. When a rat realizes the ship is sinking, its first instinct is to bite its partner."

Ten minutes later, flanked by Detective Diaz and two plainclothes officers, we stepped out of the private elevator directly into the foyer of Penthouse 4B. Julian used a keycard obtained legally through the hotel management via an emergency court-ordered preservation of stolen corporate assets.

The double doors swung open silently.

Valerie was in the living room, frantically shoving stacks of hundred-dollar bills and velvet jewelry pouches into two massive designer duffel bags. She wore dark leggings and a trench coat, her forged passport sitting openly on the marble kitchen island beside a half-empty glass of champagne.

She didn't hear us until the click of Detective Diaz’s holster broke the quiet.

"Going somewhere, Valerie?" I asked smoothly.

Valerie spun around, letting out a sharp shriek, nearly tripping over a duffel bag. Her eyes darted wildly toward the balcony, then toward the bedroom, before settling on the police badge pinned to Diaz’s chest.

"Andrea!" she gasped, her hands shaking so hard a stack of hundred-dollar bills slipped through her fingers, scattering across the hardwood floor. "How... how did you find me?"

"You didn't pay your roommate her share of the hush money," I replied, walking slowly toward the kitchen island. I picked up the forged Spanish passport, glancing at the terrible photo of Valerie with dyed blonde hair. "Maria Lopez? Really, Valerie? You couldn't even come up with a creative alias?"

"It was Marco's idea!" Valerie broke down instantly, the haughty, arrogant mistress from the birthday party vanishing completely, replaced by a pathetic, cornered thief. She fell to her knees, sobbing violently. "He planned everything, Andrea! I swear to God! He approached me eighteen months ago. He said you were a cold, controlling bitch who didn't appreciate him! He said if I helped him divert the funds, we’d take the company and live like royalty in Europe!"

"And Leo?" I asked, my voice dropping into a chilling whisper that made Valerie flinch. "Was locking my five-year-old son in a dark closet Marco’s idea too?"

Valerie looked down at the floor, tears streaking her mascara in ugly, black lines. "Marco brought him to my apartment because his nanny had the day off... Leo wouldn't stop crying for you. He was screaming that he wanted his real mommy. Marco lost his temper and pushed him into the hall closet... I didn't want to! Marco told him that if he made a sound, bad things would happen!"

A wave of pure maternal rage surged through my chest, but I kept my hands folded tightly in front of me. I wouldn't give her the satisfaction of losing my composure.

"Detective Diaz," I said, without turning around. "Do you have the recording?"

Diaz tapped his pocket with a nod. "Every word, Mrs. Chen."

Valerie looked up, terror filling her eyes. "Please, Andrea! Don't let them send me to prison! Marco has the board meeting at ten! He thinks he’s going to use the proxy votes he stole from your sister to vote you out as CEO! I’ll testify against him! I’ll tell the board everything! I’ll hand over the flash drive with the Paris designs right now!"

She scrambled toward the couch, digging frantically under the cushion, pulling out a sleek silver flash drive and holding it up like an offering.

I took the flash drive from her trembling fingers and handed it to Julian.

"You are going to testify, Valerie," I said coldly, looking down at her like dirt on my shoe. "You’re going to walk into that boardroom with me in two hours. And you are going to tell my board of directors exactly who Marco Chen is. If you do that, the District Attorney might recommend federal minimum security instead of a twenty-year state sentence. But if you blink wrong, if you deviate by one syllable from the absolute truth, I will make sure you rot in an upstate cell until you are an old, forgotten woman."

May you like

Valerie nodded frantically, weeping into the floorboards. "I’ll do it! I’ll do anything! Just please... don't let Marco kill me!"
