Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Marco sat paralyzed in the leather executive chair, sweat dripping down his temples, soaking the collar of his expensive bespoke shirt.
"Valerie, you stupid, lying whore!" Marco suddenly screamed, turning on Valerie with murderous fury. "You sold me out! You were the one who altered the shipping invoices! You were the one who suggested the surrogacy scam! You told me she’d fold in forty-eight hours!"
"You threatened me!" Valerie shrieked back, her mascara running down her neck as she strained against her handcuffs. "You told me you’d kill me if I didn't help you take her company! You told me we’d be millionaires in Lisbon! You ruined my life, you monster!"
"Quiet! Both of you!" Detective Diaz commanded, his voice cutting through the hysterical screaming.
Diaz stepped behind Marco, pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt, and clicked them firmly around Marco’s wrists behind his back.
"Marco Chen, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, grand larceny in the first degree, corporate espionage, filing forged instruments with a government agency, and child endangerment," Diaz recited with cold, professional precision. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
As the marshals hauled Marco to his feet, the bravado completely drained from him. He looked at me, his eyes bloodshot, trembling with genuine, pathetic terror.
"Andrea... please," he whimpered, tears finally breaking through his arrogant mask. "Please, don't do this. I'm your husband. Think of Leo! Think of what this will do to our son if his father goes to prison! We can fix this! I’ll sign everything back! I’ll sign a full confession! Just don't let them lock me away!"
I walked slowly around the table until I stood inches from him. I looked into the face of the man I had loved, the man I had trusted with my dreams, and I felt nothing. No anger, no hatred. Only a profound, liberating emptiness.
"You should have thought of Leo when you locked him in a dark closet to sleep with my secretary," I whispered, every word landing like a hammer blow. "You should have thought of Leo when you tried to throw him into foster care just to steal my company. You are not his father, Marco. You were just a donor who forgot that a mother will burn down the entire world to protect her child."
I turned my back on him. "Get him out of my sight."
The marshals dragged Marco down the long carpeted corridor. His desperate, humiliating pleas echoed down the hall, followed by Valerie’s sobbing, until the elevator doors dinged and shut, cutting off the sound forever.
The boardroom was deathly quiet.
The board members who had planned to betray me sat frozen, their heads down, terrified to meet my gaze.
I walked to the head of the table—the seat Marco had occupied ten minutes ago. I pulled the heavy leather chair back, sat down, and folded my hands over the mahogany surface.
"Ladies and gentlemen," I said, my voice echoing with absolute, unquestioned authority. "Before we were interrupted by federal law enforcement, there was a motion on the floor regarding executive leadership."
The lead institutional investor, an older man who had backed Marco thirty minutes ago, swallowed hard, tugging nervously at his tie. "Andrea... Mrs. Chen... we were misled. The documents appeared—"
"I don't care about your excuses, Arthur," I cut him off smoothly. "Here is what happens next. Every board member who voted in favor of Marco's motion will tender their formal, unconditional resignation by five o'clock today. If you resign quietly, I will not pursue civil litigation for breach of fiduciary duty. If you hesitate, Julian will file criminal complaints alleging you were co-conspirators in Marco’s embezzlement ring."
Not a single person argued. Pens were already being pulled from pockets.
"Secondly," I continued, "our press department is releasing a full, unedited briefing of the federal arrests, along with the certified DNA results and forensic accounting reports. The narrative ends today. Lumière Jewels will not be defined by a thief."
I picked up the black ledger, stood up, and looked at the room one last time.

"Meeting adjourned."
