Chapter 5 - The Emergency Summons

The New York County Family Court was a battlefield of flashing cameras and shouting reporters.

When our black SUV pulled up to the curb, security guards formed a tight human wall to push back the swarm of microphones.

"Andrea Chen! Did you buy your child on the black market?"

"Mrs. Chen, is it true you threatened Valerie Stone with deportation?"

"Look here, Andrea! Show your face!"

I wore an immaculate ivory power suit, my dark hair pulled back into a severe, elegant chignon, large dark sunglasses shielding my eyes. I held my head high, walking with measured, rhythmic clicks of my heels against the concrete steps. Julian walked beside me, his briefcase chained to his wrist. Leo was safe in an undisclosed luxury suite outside the city under twenty-four-hour armed guard.

Inside the courtroom, the air was cold and smelled of floor wax and old paper.

Marco was already seated at the petitioner’s table, looking every bit the grieving father in a tailored navy suit. Valerie sat next to him, wearing an oversized beige cardigan and zero makeup, holding a tissue to her eyes to play the part of a destitute, exploited mother. Their lawyer, an infamous ambulance-chaser named Richard Sterling, sat beside them with a triumphant sneer.

Judge Evelyn Ross, a stern woman in her late fifties with sharp gray eyes, banged her gavel.

"Silence in the courtroom," Judge Ross warned, glaring at the media gallery. "This is an emergency ex-parte motion regarding temporary custody and protective guardianship of the minor child, Leo Chen. Petitioner, state your case."

Sterling stood up immediately, puffing out his chest. "Your Honor, we are presenting an urgent petition for immediate removal of the child from the respondent, Andrea Chen. We have submitted a certified birth certificate obtained from the state archives indicating that Valerie Stone is the biological mother. Furthermore, we have sworn affidavits indicating that Mrs. Chen has subjected the child to psychological coaching, as evidenced by his erratic and coached outburst yesterday."

"This is an outrage, Your Honor," Julian countered, rising to his feet with steady composure. "The birth certificate submitted by the petitioner is a fraudulent alteration of public records. We have filed for an immediate forensic audit of the municipal registrar’s database."

"A fraudulent document?" Valerie suddenly wailed, leaning over the table, tears spilling down her cheeks. "How dare you! I carried that child for nine months in secret because Andrea Chen threatened to ruin my family if I didn't give him up! She used her millions to steal my baby! Please, Your Honor, just let me hold my son!"

Marco placed a comforting, staged hand on Valerie’s shoulder. "Your Honor, as the child’s legal father, I cannot allow my son to remain in the custody of a woman who is currently under federal investigation for financial fraud and child trafficking. We request immediate temporary custody awarded to me, pending the full evidentiary hearing."

Judge Ross looked over the documents, her brow knitting tightly. The tension in the room was suffocating. I could see the hesitation in her eyes; the legal system is notoriously terrified of leaving a child with a parent accused of kidnapping or illicit surrogacy, even when the accusations seem wild.

"Mrs. Chen," Judge Ross said, looking directly at me over her reading glasses. "The documents presented by Mr. Sterling carry the official seal of the state health department. Do you have immediate, conclusive evidence to rebut this filing today?"

Marco leaned back in his chair, a faint, mocking smile dancing on the edge of his lips. He thought he had trapped me. He thought the bureaucratic delay of regular DNA testing would buy him the two weeks he needed to bleed me dry.

"Yes, Your Honor," I spoke, rising from my seat with effortless poise. "We do."

Julian opened his briefcase and pulled out a thick, sealed portfolio. "Your Honor, we present two critical pieces of evidence. First, the certified, triple-blind genetic test completed four hours ago by the Department of Forensic Medicine at Columbia University. It confirms, with a ninety-nine point nine-nine percent statistical certainty, that Andrea Chen is the sole biological mother of Leo Chen."

The courtroom gasped. Marco’s smile froze instantly.

"Second," Julian continued, his voice ringing like a bell through the hall, "we present the certified passport records and international entry stamps for Valerie Stone from five years ago. Nine months prior to Leo’s birth, Miss Stone was not pregnant in a secret clinic in New York. She was residing in Bali, Indonesia, working as an unaccredited yoga instructor, as evidenced by her own social media posts, her visa extensions, and thirty-four high-resolution photographs of her surfing in a bikini while six months 'pregnant' with my client's child."

Julian dropped a stack of glossy color photographs directly onto the judge’s bench.

Valerie’s face turned from pale to ghostly white. She gasped, her mouth opening and closing like a landed fish.

Judge Ross flipped through the photographs, her expression darkening into thunderous fury. She looked down from the bench, her gaze locking onto Valerie and Marco like twin laser beams.

"Mr. Sterling," Judge Ross said, her voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "Did you verify these documents before filing an emergency sworn affidavit with this court?"

Sterling scrambled, his papers scattering across the table. "Your Honor... my clients assured me... the birth certificate was obtained through an official clerk—"

"I suggest you sit down, Mr. Sterling," the judge snapped. She slammed her gavel down with a crack that shook the wooden podium. "Petition for emergency custody is summarily DENIED with prejudice! And I am referring this matter immediately to the District Attorney’s office for investigation into perjury, forgery of state vital records, and extortion!"

Marco jumped to his feet. "Your Honor, this is a procedural ambush! She—"

"One more word, Mr. Chen, and I will have you held in criminal contempt and taken into custody right this second!" Judge Ross barked.

I looked across the aisle at Marco. His hands were shaking violently, his face twisted in humiliated fury. Valerie was clutching her head, sobbing genuinely now—not from grief, but from pure, unadulterated terror.

I didn't smile. The battle had been won, but the war was far from over. Because as we exited the courtroom, Julian’s phone flashed with an urgent security alert from my estate.
