Chapter 13 - Face to Face with the Ghost

Ten minutes later, the warehouse was ablaze with high-powered floodlights as Whitfield security secured the entire perimeter.
Naomi sat wrapped in heavy wool blankets on the tailgate of an ambulance, Sophie clutched desperately in her arms. The little girl had stopped crying, wrapped in Daniel’s dry tactical jacket, drinking warm broth and holding onto Naomi’s neck like a koala.
Daniel stood nearby, his wet hair plastered to his forehead, wrapped in blankets of his own as paramedics checked his bruised ribs. He couldn't take his eyes off Naomi and Sophie.
Footsteps approached from the shadows behind the water tower.
A tall man stepped into the floodlights.
He was lean, weathered, with a jagged scar running down his cheek, gray eyes identical to Daniel’s, and a sniper rifle slung over his shoulder.
Daniel froze.
The two brothers stared at each other across fifteen years of death, blood, and silence.
“You still jump into freezing water without checking the depth, Daniel,” David Whitfield said, his voice husky, a faint smirk touching his scarred lips.
Daniel took two long strides, grabbed David by the neck, and pulled him into a bone-crushing embrace.
David grunted, laughing softly, wrapping his arms around his brother. “Good to see you too, little brother.”
“You bastard,” Daniel breathed, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. “Fifteen years.”
“I had to keep them off you, Daniel,” David explained quietly, pulling back and looking into his brother’s eyes. “Victor would have killed you both if I hadn't made myself the ghost he was hunting. But when I found out Clara’s daughter was working in your mansion, I knew the board was set. I had to send the message.”
David looked past Daniel toward Naomi.
He walked slowly toward the ambulance tailgate. Naomi looked up, her blue eyes wide as she studied the man who had orchestrated their salvation from the shadows.
David smiled gently, reaching into his pocket. He pulled out a slightly damp, water-resistant sealed package and handed it to Naomi.
Inside was Sophie’s stuffed bunny, retrieved from the riverbank by his overwatch spotter.
Sophie gasped, her face lighting up with pure, miraculous joy. “Mr. Bunny!”
Naomi choked back a sob. “Thank you... thank you for everything, David.”
David shook his head. “Don't thank me, Naomi. You saved my brother tonight. You gave the Whitfield family its soul back.”
He turned to Daniel, clasping his shoulder. “The federal courts unsealed the warrants ten minutes ago. Victor Cole, Vanessa, and every corrupt official on their payroll have been arrested. It’s over, Daniel. We won.”
Daniel looked at his brother, then turned his gaze back to Naomi and Sophie.

“No,” Daniel whispered softly. “We’re just getting started.”
