Chapter 8 - The Cole Family's Sin

By eight o’clock that evening, Whitfield Tower had been converted into a tactical war room.
On the digital screens lining the wall, the files from the safe deposit box were decrypted and laid bare. The crimes of Victor Cole spanned three decades: contract killings, fraudulent bankruptcies, illegal port smuggling, and the systematic poisoning of Daniel’s father, Marcus Whitfield.
Naomi sat beside Daniel at the long conference table, holding Sophie in her lap. The little girl had fallen asleep again, completely oblivious to the war being planned around her.
“The autopsy reports were forged,” Marco said, pointing to a document on the screen. “Victor Cole paid the chief coroner two million dollars fifteen years ago to declare Marcus Whitfield’s death a heart attack. Three weeks later, your brother David discovered the ledger and was targeted in the warehouse fire.”
Daniel’s jaw was clamped so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek. “My father died thinking his heart was failing him. While Victor sat at our dinner table, drinking our wine, pretending to be our closest ally.”
He looked at Naomi. Her silver pendant lay on the table, opened to reveal the micro-etched seal of the Whitfield founding charter.
“Your mother, Clara, tried to stop him forty years ago,” Daniel said softly. “She knew Victor was a sociopath. She left the family because my father was blind to Victor’s corruption. She raised you in secret to keep you away from the poison of this city.”
Naomi gently stroked Sophie’s hair. “She always told me that family wasn't about who had the biggest house or the most power. She said family was about who would stand in front of a bullet for you.”
Daniel reached across the table, covering her hand with his own. “Clara was a wise woman.”
Suddenly, the encrypted terminal on the desk beeped. A live satellite feed connected.
A silhouette appeared on the screen.
“David,” Daniel said immediately.
*“The Drake Hotel is completely surrounded,”* David reported, his voice crisp. *“Victor has brought seventy armed men. Every major family head from New York, Detroit, and Miami is inside the Grand Ballroom. Victor is about to forge your signature on the merger agreement and claim you were killed in an accident.”*
“We’re leaving now,” Daniel replied. “What’s your position?”
*“I have the high ground across the street,”* David said. *“When the doors open, walk in with the true heir. I will provide sniper overwatch on the northern terrace. Let’s finish what father started.”*
Daniel stood up, buckling his shoulder holsters. He put on his charcoal three-piece suit, adjusting his silk tie.
He turned to Naomi.
Standing in the corner was a garment bag brought by Chicago's most exclusive designer. Inside was an emerald-green silk evening gown, regal, flawless, cut like liquid emerald. Beside it lay a diamond choker from the Whitfield ancestral vault.

“Put it on, Naomi,” Daniel said softly. “Tonight, Chicago bows to its queen.”
