Chapter 16 - Retribution

That evening, the Whitfield brothers stood on the edge of the lake behind the Cole manor.
A metal barrel burned with the fraudulent contracts, the forged wills, and thirty years of blackmail files Victor Cole had used to terrorize Chicago.
The flames danced against the twilight sky, casting long shadows across the water.
David took a deep breath, letting the smoke wash over him. “I’m leaving tomorrow, Daniel.”
Daniel frowned, turning to his brother. “You just came back. Stay. Take your half of the business.”
David laughed softly, shaking his head. “I’ve been a ghost for fifteen years, Daniel. The boardroom isn't for me anymore. I bought a ranch in Montana. Quiet. Mountains. No bodyguards. No wiretaps.”
He looked at his brother with deep warmth. “You were born to rule this city, Daniel. But you don’t have to do it alone anymore. You have Naomi. You have Sophie.”
Daniel smiled, looking back toward the lake house where Naomi was waving to them from the lighted porch.
“Take care of yourself, David,” Daniel said, pulling his brother into a final, firm embrace.
“Always, little brother,” David replied. “And Daniel?”
“Yeah?”

“Don't wait another two years to put a ring on her finger. A woman like that doesn't come twice in a lifetime.”
