Chapter 18 - From Maid to Mistress of the House

Six months after the disaster at the birthday gala, the Grand Ballroom of the Whitfield Estate was reopened to the public.
It was the annual Chicago Children’s Charity Gala—an event previously run by the corrupt Cole foundation, now completely overhauled by the Naomi Carter Foundation.
The two hundred guests who arrived were the same high-society elite who had watched Vanessa smash the birthday cake half a year earlier. But tonight, the atmosphere was entirely different.
There were no sneers. No condescending whispers.
When the grand double doors opened, Naomi Carter walked down the marble staircase on Daniel Whitfield’s arm.
She wore a gown of shimmering midnight blue, adorned with subtle silver constellations. Beside her, Daniel looked every bit the master of his domain, but his gaze never strayed from the woman beside him.
As they reached the bottom of the stairs, several society matrons who had once ignored Naomi when she served champagne rushed forward with wide, eager smiles.
“Naomi, darling!” Mrs. Kensington gushed. “The foundation’s work in the inner-city schools is simply magnificent! You must let us host a luncheon for your committee!”
Naomi smiled politely, the poise in her demeanor effortless. “Thank you, Mrs. Kensington. We welcome any contribution that genuinely helps the children.”
She didn't show spite. She didn't seek revenge. Her grace was so absolute that it made those who had once mocked her feel utterly small.
Daniel leaned down, whispering against her ear, “You handle them better than I handle syndicate bosses.”
Naomi laughed softly, her eyes sparkling. “They’re much less dangerous than syndicate bosses, Daniel.”
“Don't underestimate high-society vipers,” he chuckled. “They have venom, just no guns.”
Suddenly, the orchestra stopped playing.
Marco stepped onto the raised bandstand, tapping a crystal glass with a silver spoon.
The room hushed.

Daniel stepped away from Naomi, walking toward the center of the marble floor—the exact spot where, six months ago, a chocolate cake had been smashed in humiliation.
