Chapter 19 - The Proposal

The crowd parted, forming a wide circle around Daniel Whitfield.
He looked at Naomi, his gray eyes burning with an open, vulnerable warmth that stunned every socialite in the room.
“Six months ago,” Daniel’s deep voice carried across the silent ballroom, “a woman walked into this room carrying a ruined cake, a cut hand, and the bravest heart I have ever known.”
Naomi’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart began to race.
“For two years, she worked in my home with quiet grace, enduring insults she never deserved, protecting her daughter with everything she had,” Daniel continued, his eyes locked onto hers. “I thought I was a man who needed nothing. I had wealth, power, and an empire. But until Naomi Carter walked into my life, I had never known what it meant to truly live.”
Marco stepped forward, carrying a silver tray covered by a velvet cloth.
He lifted the cloth.
Sitting on the silver tray was a modest, beautiful, single-tier chocolate birthday cake.
On top, written in flawless gold icing, were the words:
*THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME A HOME.*
And beside the cake was an open velvet box holding a flawless, ten-carat royal blue diamond ring, sparkling like the night sky.
Daniel turned to Naomi, dropped onto one knee on the marble floor, and looked up at her.
The entire ballroom gasped, then held its breath in pure silence.
“Naomi Carter,” Daniel said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. “You are the true heir to this house, the queen of my heart, and the love of my life. Will you do me the greatest honor of my existence, and become my wife?”
Naomi stood motionless for a single second, tears spilling over her eyelashes, her hand covering her mouth.
Then, breaking all high-society decorum, she lifted the hem of her gown and ran across the marble floor straight into his arms.
“Yes!” she cried, throwing her arms around his neck as he rose to catch her. “A thousand times, yes!”
Daniel lifted her off her feet, spinning her around as the entire ballroom erupted into thunderous, standing applause.
He slipped the breathtaking blue diamond onto her finger, its fit perfect, and pulled her into a deep, passionate kiss that erased every memory of pain, blood, and humiliation that had ever touched that floor.
From the front row, Sophie, wearing a little matching blue dress, clapped her hands and jumped up and down. “Daddy kissed Mommy! Daddy kissed Mommy!”
