Chapter 5 - The Whisper from the Dead

By morning, the rain had washed the Chicago streets clean, but the city was on edge.
Daniel sat in his private office on the forty-second floor. On his mahogany desk sat three objects: the torn birthday card reading *DANIEL, YOUR BROTHER IS STILL ALIVE*, the crayon drawing by Sophie, and a burner phone retrieved from one of Victor Cole’s fallen mercenaries.
Naomi stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, dressed in comfortable gray cashmere clothes Daniel’s staff had quietly provided. Sophie was in the adjoining sunroom under the watchful, surprisingly grandfatherly eye of Marco, happily eating pancakes with extra strawberries.
“You haven't slept,” Naomi said gently, walking toward Daniel’s desk.
Daniel looked up from his tablet. Dark circles shadowed his gray eyes, but his gaze was sharp, electric. “In my world, sleeping when a war starts is how you end up in a shallow grave.”
“You shouldn't have to fight this alone,” Naomi said. “If Victor Cole wants the trust shares, give them to him. I don’t care about billions of dollars, Daniel. I survived on minimum wage for five years. All I want is for Sophie to be safe.”
Daniel stood up, towering over her. He reached out and gently cupped her cheek. The intimacy of the gesture was natural, unhurried, as if they had done it for years.
“Those shares belonged to your family, Naomi. Victor Cole starved your adoptive mother, hunted your real parents, and treated you like garbage through his daughter. I don’t surrender to thieves. And I don’t let anyone steal what belongs to the woman under my protection.”
Naomi's heart fluttered dangerously against her ribs. “The woman under your protection?”
“More than that,” Daniel muttered, his thumb tracing the soft curve of her lower lip. “Much more than that, Naomi.”
Before he could elaborate, the burner phone on the desk rattled against the wood.
A single vibration.
Daniel answered it, putting it immediately on speaker. He didn't speak. He waited.
A distorted, deep voice echoed through the speaker. *“The cake was chocolate because you always hated vanilla, little brother.”*
Daniel’s hand froze. The blood drained from his knuckles as his grip tightened on the edge of the desk.
“David,” Daniel whispered.
A low, raspy chuckle came through the line. *“You took your time calling off the wedding. Vanessa was always a viper. Her father is worse.”*
“Where are you?” Daniel’s voice cracked with fifteen years of buried grief, fury, and disbelief. “Where have you been? I buried a coffin with your name on it!”
*“You buried a corpse Victor Cole burned beyond recognition to convince you I was dead,”* David said, his tone turning somber. *“If I had reached out to you, Victor would have launched this war a decade ago, when you were too young to win it. I had to disappear to build my own network. To find Clara’s missing daughter.”*
Daniel’s eyes met Naomi’s. She was trembling, her hand covering her mouth.
“She’s here, David,” Daniel said. “Naomi is standing right next to me.”
A long pause hung over the line. *“Let me speak to her.”*
Daniel handed the phone to Naomi. Her fingers shook as she brought it to her ear. “Hello?”
*“Naomi,”* David’s voice softened dramatically. *“Do you still have the silver pendant your mother gave you before she passed away?”*
Naomi touched the small silver chain hidden beneath her sweater. “Yes. I’ve worn it every day since I was a child.”
*“Inside the clasp is a micro-etched serial key,”* David explained. *“It unlocks a safe deposit box at the Old Continental Bank on Michigan Avenue. Inside is the original syndicate charter signed by our grandfather, along with the evidence proving Victor Cole poisoned Daniel’s father.”*
Naomi gasped. “Poisoned?”
Daniel’s eyes ignited with lethal fire.
*“Victor has bought off the city commissioner and three federal judges,”* David warned. *“At midnight tonight, Victor is hosting an emergency syndicate conclave at the Drake Hotel. He plans to declare Daniel rogue, claim the Whitfield assets through Vanessa’s fraudulent contract, and seize control of Chicago. You must bring that charter to the meeting.”*
“David,” Daniel interrupted, taking the phone back. “Where are you? Come in. We fight together.”
*“I’m closer than you think, brother,”* David replied. *“Watch your six. The Drake Hotel at midnight. Bring the true heir. End this.”*
The line went dead.
Daniel set the phone down. The air in the office hummed with lethal purpose.

He looked at Naomi. “Get your coat. We’re going to the bank.”
