Chapter 10 - The Cleansing of the Estate

Three weeks later, spring arrived early in the Hudson Valley.

The snow had melted, giving way to emerald grass, blooming dogwoods, and crisp morning sunlight that poured through the tall arched windows of the Moretti mansion.

A fleet of moving vans sat in the circular driveway. Luca had ordered a complete architectural and interior renovation of the estate. Every piece of furniture Vanessa had touched, every rug she had chosen, every painting she had hung was stripped, donated, or incinerated.

In the center of the foyer, where the antique armchair had once stood, sat a magnificent round marble table topped with a massive vase of fresh white lilies and irises.

Eleanor Moretti walked down the grand staircase, supported by a polished mahogany cane. Her silver hair was neatly styled once more, and though her right side remained partially weak, her posture was regal, commanding, and alive.

Waiting at the foot of the stairs was Hannah, dressed in an elegant navy-blue business suit, holding a tablet computer.

“Good morning, Eleanor,” Hannah said with a radiant smile.

“Good morning, my dear,” Eleanor replied, reaching out with her left hand to pat Hannah’s cheek affectionately. “Are the foundation grants ready for review?”

“All forty-five of them,” Hannah replied, walking beside Eleanor toward the sunlit conservatory. “The scholarship fund for inner-city maritime engineering students has already received over two hundred applications. We’re changing lives, Eleanor. Real lives.”

“You are changing them, Hannah,” Eleanor corrected gently. “I am merely signing the checks.”

Luca walked into the conservatory from the terrace, carrying two cups of fresh espresso. He wore an open-collar linen shirt, looking more relaxed than he had in a decade. The tension in his shoulders had melted away; the dark shadows beneath his eyes were gone.

He handed an espresso to his mother, then turned to Hannah, offering her a warm cup of herbal tea.

“Morning, Director,” Luca teased gently.

Hannah blushed, taking the cup with both hands. “Good morning, Mr. Moretti.”

“I told you, Hannah,” Luca said, his gaze lingering on hers with an unmistakable, quiet tenderness. “It’s Luca.”

Eleanor smiled knowingly into her coffee, watching the subtle spark pass between her son and the young woman who had saved her life.

From the open French doors, the sound of songbirds echoed across the manicured gardens.

Justice had been served. Julian Moretti and Dr. Bradley Vance had both been sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole at ADX Florence. Vanessa Ward was serving thirty-five years at a federal correctional facility in West Virginia, stripped of every luxury, every title, and every dime she had ever coveted.

The Moretti name was no longer stained by secrets, betrayal, or shadow conspiracies.

Luca stepped out onto the sun-drenched terrace, looking out over the Hudson River. For the first time in his life, he didn't feel the weight of paranoia or the burden of cold isolation.

Behind him, he heard the joyful laughter of his mother and Hannah echoing through the halls of the grand house.

He smiled, took a deep breath of the sweet spring air, and knew that the house of Moretti was finally, truly at peace.
