Chapter 3 - The Unraveling Lie

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Vanessa’s jaw worked soundlessly. The yellow silk of her dress rustled as her chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow spasms. “How... how do you know about that?”

“You thought you were dealing with an idiot, didn’t you?” Luca walked across the foyer, his tread deliberate and menacing. He stopped two feet in front of her. “You thought because I loved you, because I brought you into this home and gave you access to my family, that I didn't verify every single wire transfer that left your shell companies in the Cayman Islands?”

He reached down, picked up the legal document off the floor, and folded it neatly in half.

“Seven months ago,” Luca continued, his tone chillingly clinical, “you established an entity titled *Aegis Heritage Holdings*. You registered it under your maternal grandmother’s maiden name. Two weeks later, a comprehensive life insurance rider was attached to my mother’s estate policy. If she died of ‘natural complications’ stemming from cardiovascular failure, the payout didn't revert to the Moretti trust. It defaulted to Aegis.”

“Luca, please—”

“And if I happened to die in an unfortunate accident within twelve months of our wedding,” Luca added, leaning down until his lips were inches from her ear, “you stood to inherit forty-two percent of Moretti International Logistics.”

Eleanor sobbed into her chest, her shoulders shaking violently. “My God... Vanessa... we treated you like a daughter...”

Hannah, still trembling, slowly pushed herself up from the floor. “Mr. Moretti... the tea. You have to check the tea.”

Luca turned his head toward the young maid. “What tea, Hannah?”

“Every afternoon at five,” Hannah said, wiping her face with a shaking forearm, “Miss Vanessa insisted on preparing your mother’s Earl Grey herself. She told the kitchen staff it was a daughter’s duty. But yesterday, I came in early from the pantry. I saw her grinding small blue tablets in the mortar and pestle behind the espresso machine.”

Vanessa lunged forward, her hand raised like a claw. “You lying little gutter rat!”

Before Vanessa’s nails could graze Hannah’s skin, Luca’s hand clamped around Vanessa’s wrist like an iron vise.

The crunch of cartilage was audible. Vanessa shrieked in agony, dropping to her knees on the marble floor.

“Do not touch her,” Luca warned, his fingers tightening until Vanessa’s manicured nails turned dark purple. “Hannah has worked for my family for six years. Her father died saving my father’s life during the refinery fire in Genoa. She has more honor in her fingernail than your entire bloodline possesses.”

With a flick of his wrist, Luca threw Vanessa back to the floor. She sprawled across the marble, sobbing in pain, cradling her bruised wrist.

Outside, the distant wail of sirens pierced the cold winter air. Red and blue lights began flashing through the frosted glass panels flanking the grand entrance.

“That isn't just the police,” Luca said, pulling a set of heavy brass shears from the credenza drawer. He walked over to his mother and carefully severed the nylon cords binding her wrists and ankles. “That’s the State Attorney’s Special Financial Crimes Division. And the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

Vanessa’s eyes flared with terror. “The... the FBI?”

“Did you really believe Dr. Vance was acting out of loyalty to you?” Luca asked, rubbing Eleanor’s bruised wrists with gentle care. “Vance is heavily in debt to an illegal sports-betting syndicate in Atlantic City. He’s been on the feds' radar for six months. When I approached him three weeks ago with proof of his embezzlement, he sang like a canary.”

The grand front doors were pushed open. A team of four armed tactical officers entered, weapons low, followed immediately by two paramedics rolling a stretcher and a tall woman in a dark tailored trench coat: Special Agent Sarah Chen.

“Eleanor!” the lead paramedic called, rushing toward the elderly woman.

Eleanor reached out with her functioning left hand, clutching Luca’s arm. “Luca... Bradley Vance... he’s not alone. It wasn't just him and Vanessa.”

Luca looked down at his mother, his jaw hardening. “What do you mean, Mother?”

May you like

Eleanor swallowed hard, her voice trembling with a fresh wave of grief. “Julian. Julian was on the phone with them while they tied me down.”
