Chapter 13 - The Wolf at the Door

Hannah didn't flinch. Six years of working in the Moretti household had taught her one fundamental rule: when a predator smells fear, they strike without hesitation.
“You’re too late, Mr. Vance,” Hannah said, her voice steady and clear. “Mr. Moretti and Agent Chen of the FBI are in the study upstairs. The Swiss accounts have already been unlocked. The teardrop drive is decrypted. They know about Senator Sterling, and they know about you.”
Arthur Vance’s smile hardened into a cruel, razor-thin line.
“A federal agent with an unverified digital ledger against a sitting United States Senator?” Arthur chuckled, a cold, rasping sound. “My dear child, Washington doesn't work that way. Evidence vanishes from evidence lockers every day. Witnesses experience fatal automobile malfunctions on the New Jersey Turnpike.”
He signaled to the two guards behind him. “Take the letter. Restrain her. We’re going upstairs to have a civil family conference with young Luca.”
The first guard stepped forward, reaching out a heavy, leather-gloved hand to seize Hannah’s shoulder.
Before the guard’s fingers could make contact, the solid oak door connecting the archives to the private wine cellar swung open with explosive force.
Marcus Vance—Luca’s private security chief—appeared like a wraith from the shadows.
In one continuous, fluid motion, Marcus drove the heel of his boot into the first guard’s kneecap, shattering the joint with a sickening snap. The guard screamed, collapsing to the floor. Before the second guard could draw his concealed weapon, Marcus delivered a vicious palm strike to his throat, followed by a textbook judo hip-throw that slammed the man onto the oak floorboards, knocking him cold.
Arthur Vance stumbled backward into the corridor, his face draining of color. “What... what is this?!”
“This,” a deep, resonant voice echoed from the end of the hallway, “is my house.”
Luca Moretti walked down the hall, flanked by Agent Chen and two armed federal tactical officers.
Luca’s expression was that of an ancient king passing judgment on a peasant who had dared to spit upon the throne. He walked up to Arthur Vance, stopping inches from the older man’s trembling face.
“You always lacked your brother’s medical intellect, Arthur,” Luca said softly. “Bradley was a monster, but he was subtle. You? You walk into my home with two off-duty rent-a-cops while the FBI is having coffee in my study.”
Agent Chen stepped forward, producing a set of steel cuffs. “Arthur Vance, you’re under arrest for witness intimidation, criminal trespass, and conspiracy to commit securities fraud.”
Arthur glared at Luca with bitter, aristocratic hatred. “You think you’ve won, Luca? Senator Sterling will have this indictment squashed before midnight! You’re playing a game you don't understand!”
“Sterling isn't squashing anything, Arthur,” Luca said coldly. “Ten minutes ago, Moretti Logistics shorted every public asset tied to Sterling Capital. By the time the New York Stock Exchange opened twenty minutes ago, Sterling’s primary lender called in his eighty-million-dollar credit facility. The Senator is currently holding a press conference announcing his immediate resignation from public office to ‘spend time with his family.’”
Arthur’s knees buckled.
The tactical officers seized his arms, snapping the cuffs onto his wrists and dragging him down the corridor toward the waiting transport vans.
Luca turned to Hannah.
His eyes swept over her, checking for any sign of injury. The cold granite in his expression melted instantly into deep, protective concern.
“Are you hurt, Hannah?” he asked softly.
Hannah exhaled a breath she felt she had been holding for twenty minutes. She handed him the faded parchment envelope.

“No, Luca,” she said, her voice soft and trembling with emotion. “I’m not hurt. But you need to read this. Your father left you a message.”
