Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

Suppressed rifle fire hissed through the snowy air, popping tires and shattering the spotlights above Berth 14.

Julian’s private guards scrambled, shouting in Spanish and Russian, returning wild, uncoordinated fire into the darkness. But Marcus’s team moved with surgical precision. Flashbang grenades detonated with deafening cracks, blinding the guards and sending two of them tumbling into the freezing bay waters.

Julian dropped his satellite phone in terror, his face twisting into an expression of sheer disbelief. “What is this?! Who’s firing?!”

He turned to sprint toward the gangway of the cargo ship, but a single round shattered the steel handrail inches from his head.

Julian stumbled backward, falling onto the snow-covered wooden dock.

The gunfire ceased as quickly as it had begun. Julian’s remaining men lay disarmed, handcuffed face-down on the icy concrete.

Luca walked through the drifting smoke and falling snow, his boots crunching on the frozen salt. He stood over his half-brother, his silhouette blocking out the glare of the ship’s deck lights.

Julian scrambled backward on his elbows, breathing frantically, his expensive cashmere coat soaked in slush and motor oil.

“Luca... wait! Wait!” Julian cried out, holding up trembling, manicured hands. “Don’t shoot! We’re brothers! We share the same blood!”

“The blood we share didn’t stop you from poisoning my mother,” Luca said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “It didn't stop you from turning Vanessa into your whore and placing her in my bed for seven months.”

Julian’s face twisted, fear giving way to a desperate, snarling defiance. “She came to me, Luca! Vanessa was drowning in debt when you met her! I owned her mortgage, I owned her father’s company! She was mine before she ever looked at you! She despised you! She laughed at how easily you trusted her!”

Luca stared at him with cold detachment. “I never trusted her, Julian.”

Julian blinked, stunned. “What?”

“Three days after I met Vanessa,” Luca said, crouching down so his face was level with his brother’s, “my auditors found a seven-hundred-thousand-dollar transfer into her brother’s offshore account. I let her stay. I proposed to her. I brought her into the house because I needed to know who was pulling her strings.”

Julian’s mouth hung open. The horrifying realization hit him like a physical blow.

“You... you knew?” Julian stammered.

“I didn't know it was you until tonight,” Luca admitted, his eyes narrowing. “I thought it was the Genovese family. Or the shipping cartel from Rotterdam. I didn't think my own flesh and blood would be stupid enough to attempt a corporate coup using an amateur hitman and a washed-up socialite.”

Luca reached down, grabbed Julian by his lapels, and hoisted him effortlessly to his feet. He dragged Julian toward the edge of container 408-Bravo.

Marcus pulled the heavy steel container doors open.

Inside, stacked from floor to ceiling, were wooden crates stamped with diplomatic seals. Marcus used a crowbar to pry the lid off the nearest crate.

Luca shoved Julian forward. Inside the crate lay dozens of stolen, uncatalogued cultural antiquities and bearer bonds looted from private European estates—the collateral Julian had intended to use to establish his new empire in South America.

“Agent Chen!” Luca called out into the night.

From behind the parked transport trucks, four FBI cruisers and an armored tactical van rolled forward, sirens blaring and spotlights pinning Julian against the open container.

Special Agent Chen stepped out, holding a federal arrest warrant.

“Julian Moretti,” Chen declared, her voice ringing across the dock. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, wire fraud, grand larceny, and international smuggling.”

Julian looked at Luca, his eyes wild with terror and rage. “Luca, please! Don't do this! If they lock me up in a supermax, I’ll die in there!”

Luca leaned in close, his voice a whisper that only Julian could hear.

“Then you’d better start praying, brother. Because in this life, you will never see the sun again.”
