Chapter 11 - The Phantom Bank

The morning following the restructuring of the Moretti Family Foundation brought an unexpected courier to the gates of the estate. A sealed dispatch from the Cantonal Bank of Zurich sat on the massive mahogany desk in Luca’s newly redesigned private study.

Agent Chen, who had officially closed the federal conspiracy file on Julian Moretti three days prior, sat across from Luca. She wore civilian clothes—a dark turtleneck and tailored slacks—yet her eyes retained the razor-sharp vigilance of an investigator who knew that when a snake’s head is severed, its nervous system can still strike.

“Julian’s Swiss assets were frozen within forty-eight hours of his arrest,” Chen said, leaning forward. “Every account, every holding company, every vault box. But this came through an old telegraphic clearinghouse in Bern. It bypassed the federal hold because it wasn't registered under the Moretti name.”

Luca used a sterling silver letter opener to slit the parchment envelope. He drew out a single sheet of heavy bond paper and an encrypted USB drive shaped like a teardrop key.

His dark eyes scanned the German text.

“It’s a legacy blind trust,” Luca murmured. “Created twenty-eight years ago by my father.”

Chen raised an eyebrow. “Your father? Not Julian?”

“My father knew Julian was unstable long before he died,” Luca said, his voice dropping into that quiet, calculating register that commanded boardrooms across three continents. “This trust wasn't designed to fund Julian. It was designed as an automated poison pill. If Julian ever attempted an unprovoked hostile acquisition of Eleanor’s domestic holdings, the trust triggers an automatic audit of every offshore entity Julian ever interacted with—including his silent partners.”

Luca inserted the teardrop drive into his secure, air-gapped terminal.

The screen flickered. A complex web of financial transactions materialized in brilliant crimson and emerald graphics. Lines traced from shell corporations in Panama and Cyprus directly into three prominent names in Manhattan high finance.

Chen stood up, walking behind Luca’s chair to stare at the screen. Her breath hitched. “Arthur Vance... Dr. Bradley Vance’s older brother. And Senator Richard Sterling.”

Luca leaned back in his leather chair, the corners of his mouth curving into that cold, lethal smile that had terrified corporate predators from London to Tokyo.

“Vanessa didn't come up with the plan to burn this estate to the ground, Sarah,” Luca said quietly. “Julian didn't have the legal connections to forge the state deed transfers so smoothly. They had a senator sitting on the Judiciary Committee smoothing out the probate courts, and a Wall Street venture capitalist waiting to purchase the Moretti logistics corridors for pennies on the dollar.”

Chen pulled out her phone. “I’m calling the Deputy Attorney General.”

“Not yet,” Luca said, raising a hand. “Sterling is running for re-election in five months. If you hit him with a standard federal subpoena, his legal team will tie it up in appeals until the statute of limitations on the financial conspiracy runs out. We don’t hit him with the law first.”

Luca looked out the tall windows toward the courtyard, where Hannah was gently guiding Eleanor through the rose garden in the crisp morning sun.
