Chapter 15 - The Healing of Eleanor

In the estate’s sunlit conservatory, Eleanor Moretti sat in an antique wicker chair, surrounded by blooming jasmine, citrus trees, and orchids.

Her recovery had been nothing short of miraculous. Freed from the low-grade digitalis and tranquilizers that Dr. Vance had been secretly slipping into her daily vitamins for nearly a year, her mind was razor-sharp, her memory crystalline, and her speech completely restored.

On the glass table before her sat a tea service—prepared this morning not by deceitful hands, but by Hannah’s own careful preparation.

Luca and Hannah walked into the conservatory hand in hand.

Eleanor looked up from her book, her eyes dancing with an unmistakable maternal joy as she noticed their joined fingers. Neither Luca nor Hannah immediately pulled away; the gesture felt as natural as breathing.

“Sit down, both of you,” Eleanor commanded with a soft, affectionate laugh. “You look like two conspirators who have just robbed a bank.”

“We didn't rob a bank, Mother,” Luca smiled, taking a seat beside her. “We recovered Father’s legacy.”

He placed the titanium container and the stock certificates on the table.

Eleanor’s hand trembled slightly as she touched the parchment containing her late husband’s signature. Tears welled in her eyes, but they were not tears of sorrow. They were the release of five long years of grief, suspicion, and isolated terror.

“Lorenzo always knew,” Eleanor whispered softly. “He knew Julian’s heart was poisoned by envy. He protected us, even from beyond the grave.”

She looked up at Hannah.

“And you, my sweet child,” Eleanor said, reaching across the table to clasp Hannah’s hand. “You protected me when my own strength had failed. The doctors told me that the dose Vance prepared for me that night was meant to stop my heart completely within two hours. If you hadn't fought Vanessa, if you hadn't triggered the silent alarm... I would have died in that cold foyer, believing my son was surrounded by monsters.”

“You are family, Eleanor,” Hannah said softly, her voice thick with emotion. “I could never let anyone harm you.”

Eleanor smiled, turning her gaze toward Luca. “She is family, isn't she, Luca?”

Luca reached into his breast pocket. He withdrew the small velvet box and set it gently on the glass table between them.

Hannah’s eyes widened as she looked at the antique black velvet.

“Luca... what is that?” Hannah whispered.

“Father left this in the vault beneath the fountain,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a quiet, deeply intimate resonance. “He instructed me to give it to the woman who showed this family what true honor looked like.”

Luca picked up the box, popped open the latch, and revealed the blazing sapphire.

Hannah gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. “Luca... no. That’s... that’s an heirloom. I couldn't possibly—”

“You can, and you will,” Eleanor interrupted firmly, her eyes sparkling with joyful tears. “That stone was mined for the Moretti bride who possessed the courage of a lion. Vanessa wanted my pearls and my deed. You wanted nothing but my life and my son’s safety.”

Luca stood, taking Hannah’s trembling right hand.

“Hannah,” Luca said, looking directly into her brown eyes. “When I walked into that foyer three weeks ago, my world was built on paranoia, suspicion, and cold calculation. I thought loyalty was something you bought with employment contracts and wire transfers.”

He slid the sapphire ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly, glowing against her fair skin as if it had been forged for her hand a hundred years ago.

“You taught me that loyalty is born of love,” Luca continued softly. “I don't expect you to say yes today. I don't expect you to forget that a month ago, you were cleaning these halls while I was blind to your grace. But I want to spend every single day of the rest of my life earning your trust, earning your heart, and showing you what it means to be truly cherished.”

Hannah looked down at the blazing sapphire, then up into Luca’s dark, earnest eyes.

A single tear spilled over her lashes, tracing a path down her radiant cheek. A breathtaking smile broke across her lips—pure, joyful, and utterly free of shadow.

“You don't have to earn what you already have, Luca,” Hannah whispered.

Luca pulled her gently to her feet, wrapping his strong arms around her waist, and drew her into an embrace that sealed their future against all the storms of the world.

From her chair, Eleanor watched them, smiling through her tears as the morning sunlight bathed the conservatory in warmth.
