Chapter 12 - Hannah’s Discovery

While Luca dissected the financial labyrinth in the study, Hannah stood in the estate’s historic archive room on the ground floor.
Surrounded by century-old oak bookshelves, leather-bound family records, and architectural blueprints dating back to 1912, Hannah had taken her new role as Director of the Foundation with ferocious seriousness. She refused to simply be a figurehead.
She wore a dark charcoal pencil skirt and a cream silk blouse, her dark hair pulled back into an elegant knot. In front of her sat three banker boxes of historical maintenance ledgers that Vanessa had marked for destruction before her arrest.
Vanessa had told the cleaning staff the boxes contained water-damaged invoices. But as Hannah dusted off the heavy canvas bindings, she realized these weren't invoices at all.
They were original hand-drawn architectural drafts of the estate’s subterranean infrastructure.
Hannah flipped through the yellowed vellum pages until she reached an addendum dated August 1994—the year Julian Moretti was formally excluded from his father’s primary will.
Tucked between two structural schematics of the carriage house was a handwritten letter inside an unsealed envelope addressed to *Eleanor*.
The handwriting was unmistakably that of Luca’s late father, Lorenzo Moretti.
Hannah’s heart pounded against her ribs. She picked up the letter with trembling fingers, reading the faded black fountain-pen ink:
> *Eleanor, my heart,*
> *If you are reading this, Julian has made his move, and I am no longer there to shield you. Forgive me for the sins of my youth. Julian’s mother was not a tragedy; she was a calculated infiltration orchestrated by the Sterling family to compromise Moretti Logistics. Julian was raised not as my son, but as their weapon.*
> *Underneath the fountain in the eastern courtyard lies the secondary lockbox. It contains the original unamended shares of the Mediterranean shipping fleet. Do not let Julian destroy what we built for Luca.*
> *Trust no one who speaks with a silver tongue. Protect the boy.*
> *Lorenzo.*
Hannah gasped, clutching the paper to her chest.
She turned quickly toward the door, intending to run straight to Luca’s study.
As she reached the doorway, a shadow blocked the hall light.
Standing in the frame was Arthur Vance.
Dr. Vance’s older brother stood over six feet tall, impeccably dressed in a double-breasted navy suit, his silver hair slicked back. Two private security guards in dark suits stood directly behind him, their hands folded neatly across their waists—concealing the bulges of service pistols beneath their jackets.
“Miss Hannah, isn't it?” Arthur Vance said, his voice dripping with smooth, venomous charm. “You really have risen quite high from scrubbing tiles, haven't you?”
Hannah instinctively slid the letter behind her back, her chin lifting with defiant pride. “Mr. Vance. You are trespassing on private property. The security gate was instructed to admit no visitors without Mr. Moretti’s express authorization.”
“The security guards at your front gate work for Vance Executive Protection, my dear,” Arthur said, taking a slow step into the archive room. “Or rather, they did until ten minutes ago, when I transferred their quarterly retainers personally.”
He held out a gloved hand.

“Hand over the envelope, girl. And perhaps you will live to enjoy your new executive salary.”
