Chapter 16 - The Trials of Winter

The Southern District Federal Court of New York was packed to capacity six months later.

The media circus surrounding the *United States v. Julian Moretti, Arthur Vance, and Vanessa Ward* had dominated international headlines for half a year. Tabloids dubbed it the "Billionaire Poison Plot," but inside the solemn, wood-paneled courtroom, there was no glamour—only the crushing, clinical weight of justice.

Luca sat in the front row of the gallery, impeccably dressed in a dark three-piece suit. Beside him sat Hannah, wearing an elegant ivory wool coat, the Ceylon sapphire blazing prominently on her left hand. Eleanor sat between them, holding Luca’s hand with her left and Hannah’s with her right.

At the defense table, Julian Moretti looked unrecognizable.

Stripped of his bespoke Savile Row tailoring, his hair cut short and unkempt, he wore the bright orange jumpsuit of a maximum-security federal inmate. His face was hollow, his posture broken.

Beside him sat Arthur Vance, whose arrogance had dissolved into silent, trembling despair.

Vanessa Ward had already accepted her plea bargain three weeks earlier, receiving thirty-five years without the possibility of parole after delivering three days of damning, unsparing testimony against Julian and Arthur.

Judge Harold Henderson adjusted his spectacles, his stern gaze sweeping across the courtroom before landing on the defense table.

“Julian Moretti,” Judge Henderson’s voice boomed through the hushed chamber. “You were blessed with wealth, privilege, and education that ninety-nine percent of humanity could never fathom. Yet driven by petty jealousy, bitter entitlement, and pure malice, you orchestrated an international conspiracy of murder, financial terrorism, and familial slaughter.”

Julian kept his eyes glued to the defense table, his knuckles white as he gripped the edge of the wood.

“On counts one through four—conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire across state and international lines—this court sentences you to two consecutive life terms at the United States Penitentiary, Florence High, with no possibility of parole.”

A collective gasp swept through the courtroom, followed by the furious scratching of reporters’ pens.

“On counts five through twelve—wire fraud, grand larceny, and illegal arms distribution—you are sentenced to an additional forty years, to run consecutively. Furthermore, all personal assets, accounts, and trust holdings bearing your name are forfeit to the federal victims’ restitution fund.”

The judge brought down his heavy wooden gavel with a thunderous crack: *BANG.*

Julian didn't look back. As the federal marshals pulled him to his feet and clicked the heavy waist-chains around his midsection, he caught a momentary glimpse of Luca in the gallery.

Luca did not look away. He did not sneer. He did not gloat.

Luca simply stared at his half-brother with cold, final closure—the look of a man who had finally excised a cancer from his ancestral bloodline.

As Julian was led through the side exit into the darkness of the holding cells, Eleanor let out a long, quiet breath that seemed to lift five decades of sorrow from her chest.

“It is finished,” Eleanor whispered, squeezing Hannah’s fingers.

“Yes, Mother,” Luca replied gently, turning to wrap his arm around Hannah’s waist. “It is finally finished.”
