Chapter 4 - The Poison in the Tea

Luca’s world went still.
Julian Moretti. His older half-brother. The son his father had fathered during an affair before marrying Eleanor. Julian had spent the last five years in London, ostensibly running the European branch of Moretti Logistics. He had always claimed he had no interest in the domestic estate, no desire to meddle in Eleanor’s affairs.
“Agent Chen,” Luca said without turning around, his voice dangerously low. “Secure the perimeter. No one leaves this property.”
“Already done, Luca,” Agent Chen replied, nodding to her officers. Two agents immediately hauled Vanessa to her feet, wrenching her arms behind her back and snapping steel handcuffs around her wrists.
“You can’t do this!” Vanessa shrieked, kicking wildly as her yellow dress twisted around her legs. “I have rights! I want my lawyer! Julian will crush you for this, Luca! You hear me? You’ll lose everything!”
“Take her out,” Chen ordered cleanly.
The agents dragged Vanessa down the front steps into the biting wind, her curses fading into the wail of sirens.
The paramedics worked quickly, lifting Eleanor onto the gurney. One medic immediately placed an oxygen mask over her face while the second inserted an IV line into her left forearm.
“Pulse is thready, 138,” the paramedic reported. “Blood pressure is 185 over 110. We need to transport her to St. Jude’s immediately to run a full toxicological flush.”
“Hannah,” Luca said, turning to the young woman who stood quietly by the staircase, clutching Eleanor’s discarded woolen shawl. “Go with them in the ambulance. Don't leave my mother’s side for a second. If anyone other than Dr. Morrison tries to enter her room or administer medication, press the private security dispatch on this phone.”
He handed Hannah an encrypted smartphone.
Hannah looked into Luca’s dark eyes, nodding with fierce determination. “I swear to you, Mr. Moretti. Nobody will touch her.”
“I know.” Luca touched Hannah’s shoulder gently. “Thank you, Hannah. For saving her life.”
Tears welled in Hannah’s eyes again, but this time she stood tall. “She’s the only family I have left, too.”
As the paramedics wheeled Eleanor out into the night, the front doors remained wide open. Cold winter air swept through the mansion, billowing the heavy velvet curtains.
Agent Chen stepped up beside Luca, holding a transparent evidence bag containing Vanessa’s diamond-studded smartphone. The screen was illuminated, vibrating relentlessly against the plastic.
The caller ID displayed a single name: *J.M.*
“He’s called six times in the last twenty minutes,” Chen noted. “He’s expecting confirmation that the deed was executed and the cardiac episode was triggered.”
Luca took the evidence bag from Chen’s hands. He slid his thumb across the plastic, accepting the call, and pressed the speaker button.
A smooth, cultured voice with a slight British cadence echoed across the empty, bloodstained foyer.
“Vanessa? Is it finished? Tell me the old woman is in the morgue and the paperwork is secured. We have a flight out of Teterboro in forty minutes.”
Luca stared out the open front doors into the falling snow.

“The old woman is alive, Julian,” Luca said softly. “And your flight has just been canceled.”
